Problem with windows networking
I'll stick an entry here so I can find it next time as someone else has just had the same problem. When I got my new laptop, connecting to the university network it would not allow me to connect to the ENG-3 workgroup. Regardless of what name I gave the machine It kept complaining about a duplicate name.
I finally tracked the problem down to the network node type being 'mixed' rather than 'hybrid'. Don't ask me what these mean however the fix is to change the registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters\DhcpNodeType to 8
The current node type can be found typing 'ipconfig /all' in a command prompt window.
