Marketing blogs

Response to prompt "Marketing blogs" (View all responses or all Loz's blog responses)

Had another idea, it's a bit of a cheap trick but you could offer prizes or incentives to people who at the end of the year have the most popular blog or the most no. of posts. Just a thought.

You have to be careful with that sort of thing, or it just encourages the posting of large amounts of junk. I'm a member of a forum that had a rewards system based in part on the number of posts to the forums. The end result was lots of "good suggestion", "good post", "me too" and other such content-free one-liners just to rack up reward points. Exactly the opposite of the desired effect. The system has now been changed (although not to one that encourages higher quality postings). A previous version of the system gave you points when others pressed a button to say your post was "helpful". But not enough people did that to make it work.

I'm sure it is possible to design a reasonably robust system with some thought, but it isn't necessarily a no-brainer.

We are considering a prize scheme, but it would very much be based on the quality of writing on a blog rather than just its popularity.

What sort of prizes do you think would appeal to student bloggers (within reason!)?
