Botswana/Malawi
The people who were talking about Botswana on an earlier thread – don't suppose you've been to Malawi have you?
Just wondering cos i used to live there (Malawi that is) and would be interested in hearing what you've got to say if you've been there recently.

I've not been yet. But will definitely go sometime soon. My wife went with her family about 15 years ago and describes it as if it were some kind of paradise. I'm not sure if it's safe to swim in the lake now though, as bilharzia is a big problem.
Do you know if the story about a water skiier being bitten in half by a hippo is true or just an urban myth?

Yeah i got Bilharzia when I was there, was awful especially as i was a kid could do little else except throw up for a week, anyway… im sure you wanted to know that…
must say i've never heard that one but i did have a mate at school who had been bitten by a Hippo he had this huge puncture mark and laceration accross his stomach…
Blimey this certainly doesnt make it sound like a paradise does it.
Still it is a beautiful country, the lake, widlife, mountains – you should definately go – (but maybe not right now – there's quite a lot of instability (in an African country – surely not?) becuase of the elections)

On the Bilharzia issue, I lived in Malawi as a volunteer and swam in the lake often. There are worming tablets that you can get in any chemist that you take 3 months after you have been in the lake and that sorts you out.
