Oslo Gospel Choir

Writing about web page http://www.ogc.no

Hey!

Thought I'd blog about my favourite gospel choir apart from Rev instead of writing my essay on European Integration =P

They are a little bit older than Warwick Rev as they had their ten year anniversary a couple of years ago, which they celebrated by realeasing the cd 'Celebrations'. An excellent cd.

Most of their songs are written by Tore W. Aas, who happens to be their choirmaster. I met him once at a gospel choir festival for teenagers, a very nice guy! Another person that was present was Calvin Bridges, who has worked a lot with the choir along with another big man in the gospel world: Andre Crouch (hope I spelt his name right now!).

On 10th Dec I'm going to see them as they are coming to my home county of Vestfold . I cannot wait! And hopefully my Mum and Sis have taken the hint and bought me their new cd "Joy".

Oh! Rev is currently singing an OSG song: En stjerne skinner i natt/A star is shining tonight.

The lyrics are:

A STAR IS SHINING TONIGHT

This is the holiest hour
Heaven is now in sight
Listen to bells that are chiming
Christmas has come tonight

CHORUS
Sweet are the voices high above
Singing of peace and of love
All of the world is filled with light
A star is shining tonight

A newborn baby is sleeping
Heaven is near, this night
The Lord has sent us to see Him
Under the star, so bright

CHORUS
Sweet are the voices high above
Singing of peace and of love
All of the world is filled with light
A star is shining tonight

Quietly resting among us
On Bethlehem’s golden straw
Night’s given way, as we’re standing
Watching this child with awe

CHORUS
Here, we can dream about that peace
Which has been lost for so long
Heaven has given us this child
And Earth is filled with song

    Kari,

I can't understand how after you translated the song it still rhymes in English!
    How did you manage it?

    very impressed

This past summer my family had the previlege of visiting Oslo…my daughter was competing in the Norway Cup. My cousin, who resides in Oslo gave my daughter the cd "Det skjedde i de dager". The entire cd is truely awe inspiring and moving! Being that the use of the Norwegian language is not my strongest suit…it would be nice if the cd were in English. Your translation of "En stjerne skinner i natt" was a welcomed sight. Your response would be appreciated.

  6. Well… I wish "Det skjedde i de dager" was in English too as most of my friends do not speak Norwegian… A lot of the songs on that cd are hard to understand even for me as they are in (old) dialects – like "Kling no klokka". If you have any queries to what different parts of songs mean, feel free to contact me and I will see if I can make sense of them, but unfortunately I cannot translate all the songs – they are too hard and it is very hard to get rythm and rhyme to translate!

"Stille Natt" and "Hellige Natt" are translated form German and English respectively, and "Juleevangeliet" is to be found in Luke in the Bible, but the rest I are Norwegian folk-songs and hymns I think…

Thank you for your response. Perhapes it is a matter of time that OGC realizes that their English speaking audiance is significant enough and addresses the issue….or then maybe, as you suggested, rythm and rhyme may not translate well. Oh well, in the mean time I'll just enjoy what I have! Thanks again.
    God Jul

  8. Well… They have made a lot of cd's in English if you look at their discography on the website. I think the reason why they do things in Norwegian as well is that often lyrics and songs mean more if they are written in your mother tongue, and OGC has got a huge audience in Norway…

I can recommend the cds they did together with Andre Crouch and Calvin Bridges. They are excellent. I am also waiting in great anticipation for the new cd "Joy" which hopefully will be under the tree for me this year.

God Jul og Godt Nytt År to you too!

Just picked up "joy" today. Never listened much to gospel, but "Joy" is a joy to listen to, and in english all the way!

  10. Cool! Cannot wait to get my hands on it now! (Hint hint to family: want it under the tree on the 24th!)

I might even pester Rev with more OSG next term…

  12. Sorry – first I had no internet access and then warwick blogs crashed! I have had a look around, but cannot find it online anywhere. I'll have a look through my written music files, but it occured to me that there is copy-laws, so I am not sure if it would be ok to post it… I'll try and find it first and then I'll get back to you! =D

    Merry Christmas by the way!

    Hey Kari,

Im guessing your a big fan of the Oslo Gospel Choir, i was wondering if you had the Lyrics to one of the choir's songs called 'Gloria' i have been trying to find them everywhere but still cant find them. If you have them that would be great :o)

    Thank-you

  14. If you mean the song Gloria on the cd called Gloria – which is the cd where they basically sing the passion of Christ, I have it at home in Norway… So I cannot get at it before Easter (unless I can persuade someone to type it up!). If that is not the Gloria you're talking about, then I'm lost… Sorry!

However, to all those looking for different songs. There is a possibility to order written music from OGC on their website www.ogc.no. I am sorry that I cannot be of much help!

Glad to find other OGC fans on the net. I got my first OGC CD in 1993 (Get Together) and fell in love with their music. I've recently ordered 7 more of their CDs from this site: https://www.themusicsafe.com. Also, you should definitely get your hands on their latest DVD - We Lift Our Hands. It's heavenly!

    Hi there,
At christmas my grandfather lent me the CD 'Lys I Morket'.
I was gripped by the song 'Himlen I Min Favn' and spent a good many hours trying to translate it, having no previous knowledge of Norwegian. Is the song you have translated also from that CD?
Also, would you be able to look at my translation and see how well it fits. Obviously I had to change some lines to make them fit correctly, and some I could not get so guessed (yes, wrong I know!), but I would be so grateful if you would look over it for me.

Anyway, I too love the OGC, my grandparents go and see them constantly and spend time with them on their tours. They were at the 'We Lift Our Hands' concert, on the front row as Tore's guests, and feature regularly on the DVD!

I’ve come across the song, titled, “Father” by Tore W. Aas. I heard it on You Tube, sung by the Oslo Gospel Choir. I’d really like to find a copy of the lyrics and sheetmusic. Our church praise team is eager to sing it in our church. Can you help me find it?
