Guitar progress

Follow-up to Guitar progress from Kieran's blog

I've had my guitar for 5 weeks now. Am I any good? Nahh.

My finger tips have got a hell of a lot tougher now so I can actually practice for more than 5 minutes without being in agony. They are not made of stone yet though as I tried to do a slide on the 1st string (basically a razor thin piece of wire) and jesus did it hurt…not trying that again for a while!

I've can now do (some well, some badly):

  • Most chords…but changing between them is slow
  • Simple melodies
  • Scales
  • Double stops
  • Barre chords that sound absolutely awful!
  • Hammer-ons
  • Pull-offs
  • Slides

Now, this doesn't actually mean I can play anything yet, or at least not quickly…but I'm at least getting a bit more understanding of what can be done. It's amazing how some stuff that you used to swear in a fit of frustrated rage is "impossible" is actually not that hard with a bit of practice :)

Guitar progress

So it's just been a few days since I got my guitar (and as I type this my fingers are sore from practicing) and the good news is that I think I like it. Phew.

It's hard work as the first couple of chapters of my book are all about chords and they are both not easy on the finger tips nor the on the ear just yet. F is an absolute bitch, my fingers just don't reach like that!

Leave the chords section (I will keep practicing them), I got onto some simple single finger melodies. Why couldn't they start with this stuff! I can now play a decent little rendition of "Old MacDonald" Rock and roll!!!

Anyway, here's a picture of my new toy (and as usual, Maggie crept in the shot)

My new guitar (and Maggie)

It's a Vintage V800, as with all these things, it'll take me a while to get used to it and I really have no idea if it is a good guitar or not, but it certainly sounded nicer and looked nicer than some of the cheaper ones in the shops and with a bit of advice this is the one we went for.

It's been really nice this last few months to actually relax a bit at home. So much of the last year has been spent doing DIY on the house that I've barely had time to relax at weekends and in the evenings.

My recent Spanish experiment took a bit of a setback with me quiting my actual Spanish lessons…but I have done some Spanish pretty much every day in the last week or two so I am keeping that up.

Of course my original distraction from back in the new year was Maggie and still is, bless her. Mornings (walks), lunctimes (visits) and evenings (walks) all mean spending time with the little monster and we are all that much happier for having to do so! :)

My birthday yesterday has seen a new hobby arrive. Guitar. I've wanted to be able to play guitar since I was but a teenager (a scarey number of years ago now) and now that Steph has bought me my first acoustic guitar, I have at long last started. Having only played a bit yesterday and a bit tonight, I'm certainly still an absolute beginner and 3 fingers on my left hand hurt like hell from pushing down strings…but I think I'm going to love it.

If anyone out there has any little hints for a first time guitar player then please let me know. But with a bit of luck my "Guitar for dummies" book should sort me out.
