Google Talk

Writing about web page http://www.google.com/talk

Looks like Google has rolled out yet another service…there really is just nothing slowing them down.

They have released in Beta a service called Google Talk which is basically their take on IM'ing (MSN,AIM,ICQ,etc.). It's based on the Jabber protocol so that you don't even have to use their client if you don't want to, but judging by the usability of their other products, you may as well.

You can login with your GMail account (which I just realised is still invite only…although everyone has millions of invites) and start IM'ing straight away.

It's hard to tell what affect this is going to have…are people really ready to move away from MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ and co.?

I won't go into it's features because I've not even tried it yet, but you can find out more here on their Getting Started page

Isn't the startling thing that it's VoIP as well as chat? So it's not just an MSN competitor, it's also a Skype competitor.

It's a Skype immitation, to be fair, they're so far behind that I can't see them competing with Skype in the near future, although it is the almighty Google…

  3. I'd heard that they've been buying up shed loads of bandwidth from broke telco's with some of their $4 billion so that they can essentially save themselves $millions in bandwidth charges so that they can do the skype stuff even cheaper

How long before you stop saying "Someone answer the phone" and start saying "Some Indian call centre guy is trying to sell you double glazing on the Google again, mom…

  6. I thought Skype was free unless you wanted to interface with real telephones. Can't get much cheaper than that.

Skype is free afaik, and even to real telephones it's cheap as nothing… I bought 10 before I went to China, spent 6 hours on the phone in total to landlines back home, and I've still got 6 of SkypeOut credit left. Too cheap damnit.
