I don't actually do 9:30am on a Saturday!

Follow-up to Yay!!!!!! from Warwick life according to Kerri

Saturday is my sleep in day. It always has been. This weekend, however, I have to get up as though it’s Monday (the day of my 9am lecture). Someone somewhere really does hate me.

Despite this, I could have been in an even worse situation. The crowd going to Leamington with the Tories have to leave campus at 9:15am. I have to arrive at my meeting at 9:30am but am reliably informed that coffee will be available. I’m sure that falling asleep on the training day is not the best of ideas.

So even more thank you to the very nice people who decided to give me an extra 15 minutes in bed – I’ll be making the most of it!

October 19, 2006

I’ve been so stressed out today that I sent an email earlier in the afternoon. Well, I’ve just had the reply I’ve been waiting for and want to say a really big

Thank you

to all those really nice people who voted for me!

A watched kettle never boils

I’m stressing out so much right now. I wrote yesterday that my weekend is in the hands of you guys. The only thing is that I still do not know what I will be doing on Saturday. I’ve checked my emails loads this morning but all I’ve had is spam – nothing whatsoever from the Union! Grrr!!! I really want to know what I am doing on Saturday and whether or not I was elected. I’m getting the feeling that someone somewhere really hates me right now.

Out of my hands

I realised today that I have a bit of an issue about what to do on Saturday. I have 2 “choices” but the decision is completely out of my hands. I could go to the council training day (which I have to go to if I’m elected but can’t go to if I’m not) or I could go to Leamington.

Leamington sounds much more fun but I really want to be on the council. I find myself, however, on a random Wednesday evening when I really should be working, really nervous about checking my inbox tomorrow morning. Whatever I end up doing on Saturday is completely out of my hands. I don’t think I’ve ever been in such a situation before. Normally I make my own choices about what I want to do.

This is a really annoying situation for me as I always prefer to be the one who calls the shots on my plans. In a slight moment of madness (though one I do not in any way regret) I took the situation out of my hands and gave it to the people. I do not know what I will be doing on Saturday until I have checked my inbox tomorrow morning.

Democracy is evil! I really was not expecting that my plans for this weekend to be completely dependent on the results of the union council elections.

Disclaimer: I do not actually believe that democracy is evil, just taking the plans for my weekend out of my hands is.

I went to Christian Focus

Follow-up to Help! What should I do on Sunday? from Warwick life according to Kerri

After much deliberation, I decided that it would be more in my best interests this week to go to Christian Focus. They provided food (always a good thing) and it was a good night. I’m still getting over freshers’ flu so decided I would not lose my voice again (as I did whilst out canvassing in the Union yesterday afternoon) and therefore did not spend that much time campaigning – though I did manage to slightly change the subject of a conversation (we were talking about exec committees on societies) and tell loads of people I was standing for council. I may have been lucky enough to pick up a couple more votes tonight but only time will tell now – we find out on Thursday.

I am now going to be really annoying and encourage all of you to vote in the council elections that are tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday. Please do not forget. If you are a scientist and want to read my manifesto then either go to the Student Union website and click on the “Elections” tab (near “Ents”, you can’t miss it) or read the entry below in my blog.

Why you should all vote for me

I have just received a comment saying that I should use my blog rather than going out canvassing in the Arts Centre on some random Friday evening (I was actually going all round the social areas in and around the Union, not just the Arts Centre). Well, I was always going to publish the rough jist of what I put in my manifesto on my blog today so here goes:

Want a Councillor who is passionate?
You can have one – but there is one condition…
You need to vote for Kerri Parish!

About me
  • I am a first year maths and physics student who is passionate about how the Student Union is run and really wants to get involved.
  • I am involved in university life, being a member of many societies.
  • I may be a fresher but I can give you fresh ideas.
  • I am a politically minded and politically active citizen. I will be going on the anti top-up fees protest on October 29th. I am also a member of the Warwick Conservative Society and Speak.
  • I am passionate about making a difference for the community. I am a member of the Warwick Volunteers Society.
My aims
  • I feel that I will be able to make a real difference for the students at Warwick if elected to the Council.
  • I will go out of my way to discover and therefore best represent the views of those in my department.

So vote Parish4Council!
If you don’t, you will regret it!

So now you know why I want you to vote for me. Please don’t forget.

Anyway, in further response to that comment, we were told that word of mouth is the best weapon we have. I was never going to rely on just one method of canvassing but a mixture of methods. For example, I have a couple of socials on tomorrow so I will be dropping it into almost every conversation that I’m standing for the Council.

I'm such an idiot

Well, that is how I feel :(

I’ve just returned from going around campus asking random people if they would be willing to vote for me. I’ve had such a mix of responses:

  • Some said they would at least consider it – good, we want more of this!
  • Some (the majority) weren’t even scientists.
  • Many of those who were scientists thought I was weird for asking them if they were scientists before I asked them if they could vote for me – don’t blame me, I didn’t make the rules!
  • One, in the Arts Centre, thought when I asked if she was a scientist that I was lost and looking for the science department – errm, no, I was going to ask if she was willing to vote for me!

I’m now back in my room (I couldn’t think of anywhere else to go tonight) with a rather large pile of work that I really cannot be bothered to do right now just procrastinating by writing on my blog. I guess I really should get to work as I have so much to do this weekend. I’m now really glad I didn’t go to the debating competition at UCL, much as I would have loved to have gone.

Anyway, one last thing before I go that is aimed at all science faculty students. I would really appreciate it if you would at least consider voting for me next week.

Help! What should I do on Sunday?

Rag Quiz or Christian Focus social?

This is really annoying me. I am reliably informed that there will be more people at the Rag Quiz but I am also reliably informed that loads of the people in Christian Focus are in the science faculty. I’m definitely going to one of them but I need to drop it into as many conversations as possible that I’m standing for Union Council (preferably to scientists). Which social should I go to? Answers in the comments section please.

Cures for freshers flu really needed

I’m ill. I’ve already missed 2 lectures cos of it and fell asleep in loads more. I really do not want to be still ill at the weekend cos I have so much stuff to do then. Please let me know if you have any wonder cures that mean I can get my campaign in full swing on Friday evening – without being ill.

I've joined Facebook

On the advice of an opponent, I’ve joined Facebook so any Warwick students should go and look at my profile. It would be very much appreciated. I’ve set up a couple of groups also – one for my course mates and one for wannabe councillors – so go there and find out more about me!
