California, Rest in Peace
No it hasnt disapeered. Its still there. But what has appeared from it is the new Red Hot Chili Peppers single.
Dani California is now available on iTunes (or download it elsewhere if you fancy dodging the government and that 79p charge). Everyone should get it. Its a real return to form for the Red Hots and they are sounding sharp. Its still typically RHCP with the technical specs (Fleas usage of pentatonics throughout is trademark, while Keidis' vocals jump between mainly two notes, anoter signature).
The sound feels like we are reliving the 70's but with a knowledge of what happened. Frusciantes guitars again blend beautifully and his solo at the end sounds inspired by late 60's early 70's songwriters. Smith also gets a note of referance for just playing those drums in the most solid of fashions.
This new style for them is born from what they really like doing and thats back to basics. In hindsight of the Hyde Park tracks, they've come a long way from the overly complex Leverage of Space. The chorus has an incredle rock feel while the rest is a punk part funk mellow tune. This really speaks volume for the new album Stadium Arcadium. Each listen you realise something new about this song.
The whole concept piece of Dani California is taken from Californication (the teenage bride with the baby inside) and By The Way (Dani the girl….). Keidis wanted to take her story in a new direction to a more hopeful life than her previously pregnant and lonely incarnations. Shes back and she sounds good.
