Bob loves vaginas.
Well I went to see the WASS production of The Vagina Monologues today, and I have to congratulate the stylish Vagina Warriors for an hour's thought provoking ent_art_ainment. I cannot fault the enthusiasm, humour, and warmth of the whole production.
I had not heard of Eve Ensler before today, and I had not realised the sort of response that the Monologues prompt when they are performed. We can ignore the loud objections of the religious or otherwise narrowminded; I am all for obscenity on stage, as long as it's distasteful, and I enjoyed shouting cunt as much as the next man (or indeed woman).
The salient point is that a lot of feminists have problems with the Vagina Monologues. Germaine Greer doesn't like it. Perhaps the show is too simplistic and didactic in its portrayal of women as victimised. I don't know, I suppose a simple problem requires a simple answer, but I blanched when the mc referred to the high number of rapes in England and Wales as "another kind of war".
The idea came up in a few of the skits that you are your vagina, i.e. there is some mystical sense in which your vagina/clitoris is your true self, which is nice and poetic but actually seems more like New Age fluff to me.
In any case, the show was bold, thoughtful, funny, and putting it on was a good move by WASS.
Now at least one of my housemates is of the opinion that my cock and balls preclude me from writing meaningfully about feminism. Hmph, I often reply. I am looking for a meaningful response that men can have to feminism and its increasing presence. Something other than a patronising dismissal. Or a resigned "I suppose so" shrug. Or a flag-waving cheer: "Go girls!"
What say you
