GMail (and the top secret Infinity+1 storage plan)

Writing about web page http://gmail.google.com/

I don't know if any other GMail owners out there have noticed the new 'feature' on the GMail homepage which is a small counter that is very gradually incrementing the storage space for every GMail user 1MB at a time. Its currently up to 1,127MB and having just logged in to check my mail, I can confirm that I do now have an extra 127MB of storage space. Ok.. so thats a bit of an April Fools gag by Google… BUT… a spokesperson has said that they are going to, with immediate effect, look at bumping all accounts up to 2GB but would not like to consider that the maximum available for users and look at offering more for heavier users if they need it!

Its funny – I can't help but laugh how Google effective play with storage space and features which make the other 'free' email providers sweat as they try and work out how to offer the same features.. keep it up Google.. its entertaining :)

  2. It's important to remember that GMail itself was announced on April 1st and almost everyone was convinced it was a joke.

  3. The increase in space isn't a hoax as far as I know. Given that I'm only using 9mb at present, a 2GB upgrade isn't overly important!

    The infinity+1 storage system IS a joke.. the 2GB (or more) i'd say isn't a joke! :)

  5. What you've got to remember is that the 2GB limit probably doesn't actually mean they need to buy any more storage. They know full well that the vast vast majority of people won't ever use 1GB let alone 2GB. They'll only ever buy more storage as and when they need it, it's not like they'll have 2GB of empty space sitting there for every user just in case.

Oh absolutely.. I mean i'm using 1% of my er.. whatever its at now thanks to the counter (1.34GB?) – but I would be interested to know how much space is being used in total by all their users so far.

And if they continue to offer this space like they are now, utilities like the GMail Drive Shell Extension (link) will become ever more appealing :)

  7. This morning, GMail is still showing its available storage as going up in that little counter thing – 2026 and counting. It's showing up in my Inbox as well, even if that fun little graph has disappeared :(
It does seem to be slower – but I don't see that Google will lose anything by inifitely increasing the available storage – it's a bit scary really.
