It's a bit odd at 49 years old to be a fresher again. I remember well the end of September 1983 when I did this for real, the first time. I hadn't done too well in my "A" Levels having spent too much time in choirs, on stage and in the bars of Belfast, so I went through clearing and ended up with a place on History with Drama BA (Hons) at King Alfred's College, Winchester.
With no idea what to expect, I got the ferry from Larne and drove with Mum and Dad overnight from Stranraer to Hampshire. I shared a room in Allison Lodge with three other lads; two trainee teachers and an archaeologist. Not bad lads, but it was a bit intense to be flung together like that. I still have some great friends from KAC, none of them from those original three though...
This time is a bit different. I'm part-time and financially independent for a start and I'm also rather more engaged with my subject! After three years at KAC I had failed and resat papers in years 1 and 2, but managed to scrape a 2:ii, a good drinker's degree; not bad given that I had lit something like 36 different theatre productions in my time there.
I won't have the opportunity for that kind of social life at Warwick. It's a shame in a way, but then I live 90 miles away and I don't drink anymore which is better for all concerned! I will try and write a bit about what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, I can't offer any great insights but perhaps this writing will clarify my own thoughts.
Much love to all new undergrads out there. It is frightening and new, but it will be great fun. It was for me!
