Mobile options

My mobile lacks the voicemail option I want. I want a setting for "In a meeting" where the message that callers hear is this:-

Hi, this is John. I'm in a meeting at the moment, so please leave a message, or if it's something urgent, press 1 now to call me anyway.

It doesn't seem to me that there is any technical reason why this couldn't be done, and it would be the perfect sweet spot between completely contactable and not contactable at all. Why don't mobile operators offer this?

If they thought there was any money in it I'm sure they would. I doubt it would be that popular though as I suspect most people would just press 1 anyway.
My mobile unfortunately appears to lack the facility to disable voicemail completely, since I refuse to pay to pick them up (probably explains why my annual usage on PAYG averages at less than £10/year)

Well, maybe. Depends who has your mobile number, I guess. For me, it's my wife, a few friends and a few colleagues. I think they'd all make sensible choices about when to interrupt and when not. But if your mobile number is your only number and you give it to everyone, I can see that that might not be the case.

There is such an option available, it's called a Secretary. Useful for many other things besides.

Here's my approach to this problem.

In meetings, set the phone on silent/vibrate. If somebody phones and you can't answer, reject the call and it will go to voice mail and you can deal with it later. If they phone again immediately (assuming you can tell from CLID), it must be important so you should probably answer. This seems to work well with a reasonable mixture of friends/family/colleagues and random commercial organisations who have my number.
