knowledge and asset management

From having discussions with my group project, it makes me realize that in order for an organization to become excellent, creating learning organization is really significant due to sharing knowledge will raise learning, in turn, learning encourage improvement, improvement can help to have better performance, and the better performance will help the organization boosting up profitability. Therefore, the learning organization theory cannot be ignored.

In my view, I think the knowledge management is the first thing that should concern before having an asset management. This is because if the company can encourage people share knowledge and create learning, the people could be able to have systematic thinking. By having the systematic thinking or rational thinking, it could help in managing the asset. The knowledge management should start from individual level, to team level (or department level), and then expand into organizational level. As more learning expand throughout the organization, the shared knowledge can be a part to help in improving the asset management. For example, as my group using the lean six sigma in resource utilization, the DMAIC could be one systematice approach of thinking that could allow the people in the department to think more rational. After the knowledge and asset managements are applied within the EFQM model, starting from leadership, followed with people, strategy, partnership and resoource, and processes, products and service (ENABLERS), it will enocurage the organization to improve the performances in RESULTS side. For instance, as the company has health and safety management, by concerning more on people, it will reduce accident while the workers working, which in turn, there is no obstacles for the employee to run the working processes. Thus, the outcomes of the work or performance will be better.

Therefore, in the real- life business, when set up an organization or continue doing any businesses, it is vital to concern on having knowledge and asset management as it can be a necessary factor that helps the company boost up the incomes.

knowledge management and organizational culture

From seminars on Monday, about organizational culture and knowledge management, it is an interesting topic and debatable. As Connie mentioned about creating trust to people in an organization in order to encourage them sharing knowledge throughout the organization. In my view, I totally agreed with her. Also, I think it is role of leaders to create trust, and embolden their people to get involve in the knowledge management. The leaders may show them benefits and good performance outcomes from admit in the sharing knowledge system. During the debate, we discussed about how to implement trust creation. Therefore, I came back and research on it. From the research, the organization could start the management through having an information system, which is by arranging people data and processes that interact to support daily operations, decision making, and problem solving in the organization. By doing this, it allows the people to capture, share, develop, and make used of knowledge. In addition, another suggestion is having a reward system. In my opinion, I think blogging is like a way to share knowledge within MBE students, and also others who can take advantages from this. As Paul using grading as a reward for those who keep blogging and share their reflective, the students attempt to blog as many as possible in order to get the 10 marks. Therefore, for me, I think rewarding system can be a way to motivate someone to keep doing something. However, the leaders also can use recognition instead to motivate them. Furthermore, in order for the organization to create the knowledge management system, the organizational structure also needs to be considered. This is because if the organization is bureacratic, it will makes learning process run slowly and can raise constraints on information flow due to the people may not feel free to raise their opinions, and share their ideas.

Anyway, to implement the knowledge management, I think it takes time for an organization to create this culture....

KBAM – Asset Management

Since the last week, I have spent my time reading and searching about asset and knowledge management, its quite alot to read and understand. From our group meeting, we planned to start applying the asset management first following with the knowledge management due to the asset management seems to be easier and more understandable as it is tangible.

From my study, in order for an organization to achieve excellence, I think it is really useful and significant to manage the organization's assets. The assets could have direct and indirect impact towards the organization performance. For example, health and safty, and facilities management can have indirect impact to performance of the working people due to the more concern on the management, the more comfortable the people can have, resulting in the less problems, complication, and errors could occur. However, for the direct impact, for instance, life- cycle management can have straight impact towards the outcomes of the company. This is because it is deal with inventory, factory and machine, also with people, in the organization.

Therefore, I believe that, if the organization can put more concern on applying the asset management in each criteria of EFQM model's Enablers (including people, strategy, partnership and resources, and processes, products and service), I think the company could come out with better results (in terms of people, customer, society, and the whole business).

Anyway, there is controversial that it might cost alot if the company launches the asset and knowledge managements. But in my opinion, I think it is worth to spend large budget and could come up with better performance in the long term.

Leadership and followers

From taking the Leadership and Excellence course for two weeks, I have seen many different types of leadership within individuals in the class. I saw classmates when had to take a role as a leader, some lead assertively, some lead calmly, and some lead freely (kind of democratic). I tried to understand that each person has different personality, different belief, different skills, and different opinion. Therefore, it is common to have a conflict or argument between leaders and followers within the group. However, from the last leadership exercise, my group leader was kind of assertive and not open- minded, he always says that 'you have to follow me, you have to believe me'. In my opinion, I think in the real world business, there are alot of leader like this, which somehow I think it results in the negative way toward those leaders. As the leader being like this, the employees tend to not respect and feel unlike due to they will feel like they are forced to do or force to believe in the think that different from theirs. Also, as the employees have bad attitude, it will affect working performance and outputs of the organization. It is likely that they are not productive and less effective in their jobs.

Therefore, the company will run either in positive or negative direction, it mainly depends on leaders itself.

Leadership

In this week, we have done many leadership exercises, which I think it was very interesting. However, in my opinion, I think it is very difficult to motivate or engage followers to get the most out of the team. From the first seminar, I have got idea about this topic. In the real world business, I see many companies using financial incentive to motivate their employees. In my view, I think it is effective to use the fianacial incentive rather than recognition or other factors due to it is reality that most of employees will do something for wishing to get something back (especially in term of money). However, I think the incentive cannot be able to encourage someone or followers to really respect or like. Therefore, I think it is the responsibility of the leaders to adapt themselves for making the employees respect them, which I think this point is hard to implement. What I think is that I think it is easy for us to come up with the theory, but in reality it is hard to do.....

CSR

Today, we started the class with the topic about CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). In my opinion, I think the CSR creates benefits to image of an organization. For example, if an organization creates one campaign said that if you buy their product, they could be a part to help the society. Thus, this could make the customer feel that they need to buy the product to be an indirect part to help the society or be the part in that campaign. Therefore, the organization could be able to get the benefits in term of sales and also to gain the positive image to toward the customers and also the society.

In my experience, I work on one marketing competition project for Kiehl's (L'oreal). It let us to create the CSR marketing program for their company. We can chose to help the society in any way, such as we can create either help the child charity or help the environment. At that time, I felt like I was one of the company's employee who has to help create the CSR for the company. But at that time, I felt really pround that I could be a part to help the society. Therefore, I think I could understand how the eployee in the company could feel to be a part to help the society. Some people might think that they might feel that of course that the employee wont feel involve in the CSR activities due to they might think that they still dont get more wage or bonus from helping the CSR activity. But from what I felt i think money or incentive not important just to help the society could make them feel happy enough.

Leading and Managing

Today, we started the class with the topic that 'being a leader is not necessary to be liked, but should be able to share objective to team members'. Many people in the class argued that in order to be able to lead people/ members effectively and to encourage them to follow loyalty, it is very necessary that the members should like or please on that leaders. Due to they believe that if the members are pleased to the leader, they are going to follow and do what the leader guide them to do. However, if the members are not liking the leader, they might have conflicts, or being ignore or reject what the leader tell them to do. In my opinion, I think it is not important that the members need to please the leaders, it is just crucial that the members need to respect on the leaders. Thus, in other words, it means that I think respect of followers is more important than being like. Also, I think the followers just remind themselves a job that they need to do.

Another topic that we mentioned is that 'leading is about change and focus in future, but managing is about stability of the present'. But I am confused that why managing cannot focus in future issue?? Due to I think being a manager, he or she also needs to concern about the future plan too. Therefore, I am little bit confused about it...But it makes sense from what Paul said that if the manager is effective enough, they can become a good leader to focus on the future problems.

However, I think this topic is little bit confused, but I will going back to figure out again......

Leader is born or made???

After yesterday and today classes, there is one question always popped up in my mind that leaders are born or made? At first I believe that leaders are born to be, however, after discussed with my group members and listen to others' opinions, I started to change my mind that leaders are made. To be a good leader, he or she is needed to be practiced or made to be. They are needed to learn some leadership skills either from their own experience or from other people's experience.

In my opinion, I think a person cannot know whether he or she can become good or bad leader if the person is not chosen/ become a real leader. For example, in our class exercise today, one of our team member is chosen to be a leader. it is also an opportunity for that person to know whether he/ she have more or less ability to become the leader, and the person can know which area needed to be improved.

FMEA and FTA

For the tuesday class, we learnt about Failure Modes Effects and Analysis (FMEA). it is an useful tool that help to evaluate potential failures of products or service that might occur. It also helps to illustrates causes, effects, and improved actions. In my opinion, I think it is better for an organization, especially in design department, to use the FMEA tool before launching products or service, and during testing it. This is because FMEA analysis is kind of a forcast tool for the department to plan for the solution for problems that might occur toward products or service. If the department previously concern on doing this, it will help to reduce possibility of failure occurance. In the serving tea excercise, I was really enjoyed. In my group, we tried to come up with the worst scenario, we helped each other thought of the possible failure that might occur.

During the afternoon session, Jane talked about Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). In my view, I thought this one is more difficult to understand comparing with FMEA due to in the FMEA tool, it tells us what we have to do, what we need to find and what we need to concern (such as potential failure, potential effects, potential causes, severity levels, and recommended actions. However, FTA is not provided any standard table for us to do. It encourages us to draw a tree chart from our understanding. Honestly, during the excercise about engine and leak pipe, I was very confused and it was hard to complete the chart. But I think if I could understand in engineering terms, I believe I could complete it. Also, I think it is also as useful as FMEA due to it could provide the potential failures and effects.

Design for X and VOC

On Monday class, I learnt about the voice of customer from a guess speaker, Elliot Hirst, and how the VOC is important and relate to the design process of products, or service. From my bachelor degree, marketing, I took many marketing courses. it always put the voc as the center of marketing field. To achieve in a business, it is really crucial for the organization to concern on what customer want and need. Due to if the organization listen to customer, it can know how to fulfill and serve their needs. And if they satisfied and happy with the products or service, it will contribute them to come back and have repurchase.

For the afternoon session, Jane also gave another useful lecture about Design for X and let us watched the video about unflyable plane. In each occurance of failure, it is necessary to find and investigate causes of the failure, even the failure is small and not big problem. This is because if we just ignore the failure, problems will still maintain and happen again. In my opinion, I think most of failure usually occur from human errors, which including not have training of staffs or employees. From the human, it consequently causes many other problems such as problems in system design, quality control, maintainance, and reliability towards the organization's products and service. Therefore, in order to prevent the faults, any organization can make used of the design for X, such as design for reliability, design for maintainability and design for serviceability. I believe that if the people concern more on these, it could help to reduce failure and could achieve more customer satisfaction.
