Foundation research methods and mini–projects

Trying to do a research project on the basis of a 5 day summer school is something like trying to captain an oil tanker on the basis of a weekend in a sailing dinghy! The task vastly outweighs the input.

  1. People in the local library were wondering why I had so many papers/books/files etc spread over a massive table in the corner! It was the only method to use so that I could look at all the notes and handouts and review them all!

The task is to distill that into 2500 words, include further reading and research and also describe what you’re going to do! It’s not easy. I’m very less than satisfied that I’ve met all the criteria but it’s taken me a week just to do the first draft and I’m probably going to settle for what I’ve done pretty soon! :/ I think we could have spent a lot less time on case studies and more time on literature reviews which we really didn’t get to grips with other than it had to be done.

Definitely had enough of it now.

  4. Am still doing the literature reviews. There seems to be much written about criterion referencing. However it is more problematic finding this in relation to subject specific material, especially in the Arts. Annoyingly, I find it easier to use handwriting in order to draft, just can’t write from scratch on a screen, have to convert my colour coded notes.
However that is another research project!

I’ve sent mine now, otherwise I’m likely to have fiddled with it for the whole 6 weeks!!

  6. That is brilliant! I am stuck on the data analysis section. The sunshine and garden are too tempting!

  7. Does anyone know what is going on this term? I missed the summer school thinking that this module was repeated this term – don’t seem to be able to access any information on the website!

Get in touch with Cathy, Margaret. It was the only way any of us managed to eventually find out what was going on with the Summer School itself. My guess is that there’s an October start.
