Six Feet Under

Why is six feet under so damn funny?
It's my favourite programme ever and I've spent the past month (since it was bought for me for christmas) glued to episode after episode every night before I go to bed.
Thing is, fuck loads of people die. My guess is that this appeals because it kinda removes the fear of death by making it a more ordinary occurence. However, people being torn in half by moving lifts should
n't really be light-heartedly received..surely?
I also find all the central characters either exceptionally arousing, amusing or inspiring.
And the last episode of season 4? I'm bloody gobsmacked.
Just have to wait until April now to see the last series.

twiddles thumbs until April

  1. Hold up!

The whole thing about Six Feet Under is that every single character is an absolutely terrible, awful person. That's like the point of it.

  2. Disagree.
Elements of them are…yes, often ethically challenged (some being adulterous, others being confused as to whether bodies should be swapped for fakes etc). I agree that many of the minor characters are 'terrible people'...ie by commiting murder etc, and sometimes this seems two-dimensonal (all for a reason yes). BUT this only serves to highlight that the Fisher family aren't, rather they are VERY 'many-dimensional'. Considering the shit they've been through, they support each other, hold one another together and are liberal and sensitive enough to understand each others' self-destructive stupidities. Even incest becomes understandable within their little network. To me it demonstrates a challenge to the limits of human endurance…and to me that's inspiring.

    So there.
