Believe The Truth

Big surprise. Oasis have not managed the return to form they seek. OK no surprise there, but in fact they've done much much worse – Lyla, the new Oasis single (for I have acquired it) is awful. It sounds a little like their cover of Street Fightin' Man which appeared on the b-side of All Around the World, only with added quantities of self-parody, and worse, self-repetition (note lyrics about 'catching me if i fall' – I Hope, I Think, I Know off Be Here Now all over again). If we're making comparisons with recent lead singles, and we are, it's not a patch on Go Let it Out or The Hindu Times, both of which I quite like. Cue the comments about not matching their Definitely Maybe days.

  1. The end of drys

Take me out tonight and show me where this song is, for once they were great, the behemoths of Britpop and now little more than the Paul Weller of this day and age. Give them a heavenly way to die. Mangle them, forget them and let them disappoint us as only they could.

  3. You poor soul, Jim.

Haven't had the pleasure of hearing the new Quoasis but on the merits of the album title, 'Don't Believe The Truth' – a typically horrible attempt at cleverness by Noel – it's gonna be a steaming pile of wank.

  9. Right you criticis the album which you haven't yet heard – how does that work??

Ive heard clips from all the songs and if they're anything to go by it will be an amazing album.
The leaked tracks are on DC and this is what i think:

Mucky Fingers is the velvet underground crossed with kings of leon with balls. The harmonica solo is like a train car screeching to a halt. "you get your history from the union jack" This is fucking rock n roll. The bass fills in the coda just go to show how much the band have improved with the new members. Tell the strokes this is how it is done, the miserable little pretenders.

The Meaning of Soul has improved since the glastonbury performance last year. It is a stomper just 2 minutes long and it shakes the ground. Liam's sneer dominates, its simple but effective. It reminds me of the Stooges and the sex pistols. No "shiiiiinnne" but "i'll your light". This is great and it slams to a halt. Pick that one out. The bashing drums in the chorus will wake up the doubters and harmonica/weird guitar effects sound wicked, like the beatles and grateful dead.

Let There Be Love. It started life as a demo for Standing on the Shoulder…which was an acoustic track by Noel also known as It's a crime. I personally loved that song. But it has evolved as oasis have too. The piano is Bacarach-esque. Liam has lost the whine to his voice – i take it he's used to the new teeth – lol. The duet idea is great, like acquiesce but this is a beautiful song. Noel can write a song, this is the Don't Look Back In Anger/Stop Crying Your Heart Out of the new album. It is mega!! Just listen and let it wash over you. Lennon and the other fella Paul something? would be proud of this.

Keep the dream alive. The words sound like lennon again, but andy wrote this one, so its not classic beatles-oasis. The song is another grower, the weakest in my opinion of the four. The chorus kicks ass. It sounds the most like classic oasis. It will keep the fans singing but won't win new support. "i'm no stranger to this place, where real life and dreams collide, adn even though i fall from grace i will keep the dream alive" and you know they will. Th eguitar solo is what we're used to but it works. Gem and Noel play off one-another, remember the Bonehead days? Oasis weren't as musically proficient then.

The other songs sound good, but are hard to review from a few seconds, so lets wait for the album. But if you want to have faith restored in rock n roll oasis is THE band. They speak from the heart to the ppl. They've dubbed themselves a 60s band and this music draws attention to that golden and exciting era, but it draws on new influences and mixes the gallaghers' uniqueness with the best of british lyrics of the jam and the kinks, the snarl of the sex pistols and the grace of the las and the smiths. Do they still sound a bit like Lennon wannabes, well yes among other things, but if you're gonna sound like anyone, sound like the best and wear your heart on your sleeve.

Oasis rule: 21/7/00 Wembley 6/7/02 Finsbury Park 19/12/02 Birm NIA 2/7/05 Manchester

    9/7/05 10/7/05 Milton Keynes

  10. Heard The Importance Of Being Idle today on Jo Whiley, and I was quite impressed. Oasis returning to what they do best: ripping off the Beatles. Still not much of a fan of Lyla, but I'll keep an open mind about the album.
