'Knuckle down' (because I like random crap like this)...

Are you knuckling down for revision etc? Well actually I don't really care. Rather I mention it because I just found out the expression comes from the game of marbles. In the game of marbles the knuckle has to be placed on the ground whilst playing and as it's such an important rule the expression knuckle down has become synonymous with applying yourself to something diligently.

I love little bits of rubbish trivia like that…I don't care if you do or not.

Do you know where the expression "goes like stink" comes from? I heard Ozzy say it for the first time a few weeks again, and since then I've heard on TV. I think I'll be using it, but I'd like some random trivia about that.

  2. The word bouncebackability was from the famous Ian Dowie (crystal palace's manager, shame on you if you didn't know that!) which has become popular in the last year and i reckon its such a cool word that it will make its way into our dictionaries very soon!

  3. I learnt a while ago that the phrase 'by hook or by crook' comes from the mediaval (sp?) times when there was the law of usufructry – being allowed to gather windfallen apples, or fallen branches as firewood, from other people's property. But after a while, the clever peasants decided that they could 'assist' the falling of apples or firewood by using large billhooks, or shepherds crooks. So underhandedly obtaining things became known as having done them by hook or by crook.

I like things like that too

  4. Ooo and saying someone is 'streets ahead' is from the game of cribbage – one line of holes is called a street – so if you're miles in front, you're streets ahead.

  5. It's medieval, isn't it? Or mediaeval? But definitely not how I did it earlier.
