BHF Hearts First Bike Ride, London to Southend 2006

Writing about web page http://www.bhf.org.uk/sponsor/jarvism/

Right then people, it's that time of year again! I expect your support once again!

On July 9th I'm cycling from London back to my hometown of Southend through south Essex. This will be the 6th time I have done this in order to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. I did it last year and my blog entry can be found here. The actual route is 58 Miles long and details of the event (mainly how to take part) can be found HERE

Just like last year, they have produced an online sponsor form making it even easier for people to donate to the charity. You can make a donation with any of the usual bank cards, and you can donate whatever you like, small or large, it all helps at the end of the day. If you wish to donate, please go to my online sponsor page and make a donation:

http://www.bhf.org.uk/sponsor/jarvism/

All contributions go to the BHF. I know of several friends and their family members and family members of my own who have suffered from heart attacks and heart disease and other heart related health problems, and if you think hard enough, I'm sure you can think of someone too.

The BHF is entirely charity based and funded by donations and events such as this, so please give generously.

If heart related health problems have affected you, or someone you know, or even if you just want to comment on fund raising events or anything, please feel free to comment. BUT, if you want to show your support, please donate!

Thank you.

Night Fog

Tree In Fog

Claycroft (22–11-2003 1:38AM)
Sony DSC-P32
Aperture Value: F/2.8
Shutter: 1/8s
ISO: 320

There was heavy still fog that night and everything looked seriously surreal. I wish I had a better camera and a tripod. I would crop it to remove the window on the left but I like to keep all my photos as they are, so there it is as I took it (just smaller).

Server Farm anyone?

Server Farm

I worked for BioScience to help them document and sort all their computer equipment for disposal. This is a pile of 53 computers, in all there were about 100+ computers, 130+ monitors, and an insane amount of everything else like keyboards, printers, scanners, mice, cables, and components. They had stacks of CD-RWs stacked to the ceiling!!! The amount of perfectly working stuff they were getting rid of was insane, although it may have been old, there was so much it felt wrong to bin it all! But no… its going.

Unfortunately I forgot to put my phone's camera into hi-res mode!

Physoc Logo Competition

Writing about web page http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/physoc

Calling all physicists (again)!!

How would you like to win £15 worth of whatever you want?
Such as £15 of beer, wine, chocolate, biscuits, baked beans…

Well you can all you need to do is enter PhySocs logo competition. We want a brand new logo for a brand new PhySoc and we want you to design it for us. Its simple all you have to do is design a logo which can be used on stationary, hoodies, publicity etc that represents Physics.

The more unique the better!

All entries to be handed in by friday week 2 term 3, you can email them to physoc.warwick(AT)gmail.com or hand in a hard copy to Rob Treharnes pigeon hole (yr 3) in the physics computer room.

Good Luck!

Plasma

Plasma

Plasma Ball (04–12-2003)
Using my crappy little Sony DSC-P32
Aperture Value: F/2.8
Shutter: 1s
ISO: 100 (Manual)
Other: Most of the settings on this camera are Automatic which is annoying

I had always loved plasma balls, especially in the dark, so I decided to photograph my mini one in my first year. It was hard to actually get my camera to do this since its too automatic for my liking and doesnt let me have manual control. It also took a bit of effort holding the camera still freehand!

Shameless Plug – Calling all Physicists!!

Writing about web page http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~phudcz/AlumniEvening.pdf

Calling all PHYSICISTS, this is relevent to YOU!!!

  • How many of you know what you want to do after your degree?
  • How many of you have gone to careers fairs to find they are are just full of wankers bankers wanting to sit you behind a desk for the rest of you life doing something which totally wastes your 3 or 4 years of PHYSICS???
  • Want to know what previous physics students went on to?

In that case, come along on Tuesday 21st (Week 8) to PLT between 7-9pm and listen to some guest speakers and talk to some of those previous students about what they are doing now!

The Physics SSLC along with WGA & Careers Service has done this specifically for you, not for the benefit of Barclays Bank.

The selection of possible speaker subjects include:

  • Professor of superconducting engineering at Cambridge university
  • Medical physicist using MRI scanners
  • Beamline scientist for Diamond Light Sources Ltd
  • Mathematical modelling and simulation for Rolls Royce
  • Technology transfer and licencing for advanced materials and nanotechnology
  • Applications engineer for telecommunications
  • Lecturer of Computer Science at York University
  • Manufacturing engineer
  • Information engineer
  • Royal air force
  • Electricity and Gas engineer
  • Computer consultant
  • IT project manager
  • Police constable
  • Accounting and finance (we cant escape them completely)

It hasn't yet been finalised whos going to be talking, but its not all bankers for once. This event has been organised by physics students (including me) and you will probably notice shameless advertising around the department and emails!!

Click here for the official event poster!

PLEASE ATTEND, its a about real life, your life.

Quite a random shot. I was just walking around and looked across at the glimmering light and saw that. So I whipped out the camera!

Gigapxl Project

Writing about web page http://www.gigapxl.org/

Check out this website, its rather cool.
They took an aerial reconnaissance camera and put it on a tripod and took exceptionally massive high resolution images, like 6530 MegaPixels. And you thought you were good with your 5+MP Camera??

Check out the galleries, I recommend Balboa Park Reflecting Pool since it looks stunning and shows off the detail best.
