Next Stage

It has been a while since i blogged, mainly because the 4th year of my degree was quite intense. However i have finished that and came out with a 1st.

Then after a momentary lapse in resolve i agreed to undertake a PhD at Warwick. I have just started looking at pollutant mixing in the beds of rivers under Ian Guymer and Jonty Pearson.

I may now have a bit more time to keep this updated, but we shall see.

Temperature of Model Pond

These readings were taken with a discharge of 0.9 ml/s flowing through the model. All readings are in degrees C.

Temperature of header tank = 22.5, 22.5

Temperature of stilling tank = 22.3, 22.3

Temperature of Inlet - 100mm depth = 19.7, 19.7 - 50mm depth = 19.9, 19.9 - 10mm depth = 20.5, 20.5

Temperature of middle - 100mm depth = 19.8, 19.7, 19.8 - 50mm depth = 19.8, 19.8, 19.8 - 10mm depth = 20.0, 19.9, 19.9

Temperature of outlet - greatest possible = 20.2, 20.0 - 10mm depth = 20.0, 20.0

A second set of readings was taken to confirm the findings, either at 50mm depth or as deep as the probe could go.

Temperature of header tank = 22.7, 22.7

Temperature of stilling tank = 22.3, 22.3

Temperature of Inlet = 20.0 in pond, in channel = 20.7, 20.7

Temperature of middle = 19.8, 19.8

Temperature of outlet = 20.0, 20.0

The temperature of the flomes was taken to provide a comparison with a volume of water that has sat in the lab conditions for some time.

Flume temperature = 18.8, 18.8


Trace 4

Discharge in = 0.87 ml/s and 0.87 ml/s

Discharge out = 0.83 ml/s and 0.83 ml/s

Dye concentration = 1:100

Amount of diluted dye = 1 ml

At the end of the trace both discharges were checked.

Discharge in = 0.87 ml/s

Discharge out = 0.82 ml/s and 0.82 ml/s

Model Pond Progress

After some problems with the glue not setting fully, the model has now been painted (pictures now in gallery). The model is merely finished, only the pump, sensors and drainpipe to add.

Visoth is conducting a survey of the model, in order to build an accurate computer model, and set up a camera to photograph the flow.

At present the discharges being tested are scaled values for 3, 9, 15, 24, 33, 43 L/s. However a 10 L/swill probably replace 9, so that we have a match with the computer model, built by Nick.

Hi, to anyone who can be bothered to find this blog. I doubt there will be much going on, but if you want to see the progress i'm making on my third year project then you've come to the right place (as soon as i can work out how to upload photos).
