Week Two – Places of Performance

SST1 - Historiography: Ancient Greece and Rome

I found this website really beneficial, as it has a wide range of resources that you can browse through by category. Moreover, each category has different sections with an enormous amount of pictures and text to browse. There is also a brief overview of ancient Greece including information on the Trojan and Peloponnesian Wars, as well as background information on architecture, religion, morals and the geographical status of Greece. A really detailed website for background information!

This website is HUGE! Not only does it have links to a variety of other websites concerning aspects of Greek theatre, it also includes a mixture of extensive text based information that's aided by pictures. Each theatre has an introduction, a site plan, numerous pictures and sub-sections about the different aspects of the theatre and what their particular function was. It's extremely detailed and the use of text and pictures means that you're not boggled down with information that simply gets you completely muddled over names like stoa! The pictures are also done from a varirty of different angles. I found this website the most detailed out of every category that we had to research, it does take a while to browse through the links but with the pictures and detailed text, all aspects are explained really clearly.

This is just an extra website because I thought it could come in handy. There's a vast amount of theatres on the site including detailed information on famous Greek dramatists and their plays. There's a lot of information on Euripides and Sophocles in particular and this includes biographies and influences in their plays – politically, morally and religiously. The sources appear to be valid because there's an detailed bibliography and many of the books are available to buy directly through the website so I don't think it's made-up!
