Quotation of the Week

"Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. It is wrong and in-human to impose the Jews on the Arabs."

  1. The Big Bad Israeli

ghandi achieved many great things but you have to admit he was naive. When he was asked what the jews should have done in nazi germany that would have been in line with his idea of non violence he responded in all seriousness that they should have commited mass sucide. Besides he ignores the massive persecution/looting/rape/forced conversion the arabs commited in india. Take a look at the past islamic caliphates which have been described as tolerant of other religions but the truth is that for instance life for the Jews within the House of Islam has been characterized by ceaseless humiliation and regular pograms. A state of apartheid was the norm, in which Jews have been forbidden to bear arms, to give evidence in court, or ride horses. They were forced to wear distinctive clothing (the yellow badge originated in Baghdad, not Nazi Germany) and to avoid certain streets and buildings. They have been obliged, under penalty of violence and even death, to pass Muslims only on their left (impure) side while keeping their eyes lowered.

These and other indignities have been regularly punctuated by organized massacres and pogroms. So it’s misleading to make palestine and other arab countries sound like a big happy familiy just because every Jew or Christian wasn’t killed under Muslim rule. Israel was created in part to escape both christian and muslim oppression which had been virulent for hundreds of years. the borders are a different issue and lets not pretend that muslims seperatists have not prospered in gaining independence in similar ways to israel in fact ghandi’s India is a perfect example

Gandhi. M K Gandhi. Boy, I hate it when people can’t even spell the man’s name correctly yet suddenly they are the world’s experts on what he said and did.

I think there are two ways of looking at the quote, which is probably what he intended really. I’ve been to Palestine three times – yes that is Palestine as in the Palestinian Authority area inside the wall.
