China's Military Spending LEAPS 14%!

Writing about web page http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4773358.stm

I'm guessing you're probably calm at the moment. You're drinking tea. Downloading the latest episode of the UK Aprrentice. You're eating dinner. But while you're sitting there feeling safe and happy… the Chinese have increased their military spending.

It's time to panic.

Wait… they've increased by 14% to about 20bn GBP (thanks Max x 2)? Or roughly what the UK spends each year.

Wait… they've a population of about 1.4 billion people in comparison to the UK's 60,000,000?

Tuts

The Evil Empire is at it again eh!

  1. £20bn, not £20m. So almost what the UK spends. But the problem is the degree of "black" expenditure on china's military, which the government doesn't report.

  3. Max you're absolutely right. I hope everyone else managed to read it as billion otherwise I come off sounding like an idiot (well more-so than normal).

  4. *Re the 20bn being referred to as half… I had thought that the amount was close to 40bn pounds but that was, in fact dollars. So kudos to Max again.

  5. With China's role increasing in the whole international arena I think one could only feel safer having a country to create a balance for the US hegemony. There's an important truth you people are missing: it's the small, rebellious countries (like Iran maybe? altho I support Iran's claims for independent atomic researches) that haven't got much to lose, that we should really fear. Countries like the US, Russia, China and India – they are too powerful to really start using any of their weapons. It's like they are living in a warehouse full of explosives. It makes them look mighty, but they wouldn't dare igniting a single match – in their own interest. They are too clumsy to start a war without putting an end to the entire humanity. Whenever I read military reports on how many times the US could destroy Russia and/or vice versa – I can't help asking 'how many times DO they need to destroy the world?' You can really only destroy it once, so the rest is just bravado. Now, chill and go back to watching the Apprentice :)

I don’t think there’s anything to be panic of. Any country can just increase their military expenditure if they are able to. A developed country needs to have the ability to defend themselves. What will happen if China has limited military power and technology ? Use our mind, it’s not time to fear of their military expenses. As long they are using those expenditure in good deeds, there will be no harm to everyone.
