Blog: the brand

I will be working on a bunch of marketing and publicity ideas for the 'blog' brand at Warwick over the coming weeks. (I know, I get all the fun jobs!). I am at the brainstorming, oops, mindmapping stage at the moment, generating ideas and concepts.

I am interested in coming up with a definiton for 'blog', especially since it is a relatively new term. This might (or might not be) used in any branding ideas. Heres one I have concocted from various sources (no originality claimed) and am interested in any others. It sounds a bit emotionless at the moment so if anyone is inspired….

Blog: short term for weblog, a personal journal that is frequently updated and viewable by others.

  1. My blogging software, drupal, says rather more verbosely:

A blog is a regularly updated journal made up of individual entries, often called posts, that are time stamped and typically arranged by the day, with the newest on top (a diary is the reverse). They tend to be quite personal, often containing links to things you've seen, or to editorials that you find interesting. Some blogs also contain original material written solely for the blog. Since a Blog is personal, you and only you have full control over what you publish.

I use almost the same one line description when i first introduce it to academics. It makes sense to them right away. I then go on to talk about a blog usually having a single owner who publishes entries into it.
