International and other countries' law in Lexis Library

Writing about web page http://webcat.warwick.ac.uk/record=e1000553~S1

The new Lexis International platform has settled down now - it includes legal material from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and the United States. There is also some material from South Africa, and selected international law, mainly from the International Court of Justice. (International tax law material has been removed.)

You can find what is available when you select cases or legislation in Lexis Library, then select International Content to open a separate platform. It is worth noting that legal material from Ireland and selected Caribbean countries remains in the UK Lexis platform, accessible via the link to Sources. There are guides to explain this in the Library tutorial "Doing Legal Research" - in the Advanced Research section. Please contact Joshua Lam or myself if you need any help - our contact details are available on the Library's Subject Support page for Law.

How to access Lexis PSL – and why…

Writing about web page http://webcat.warwick.ac.uk/record=e1000553~S1

Lexis PSL is a database used by legal practitioners and students, providing practice notes, precedents, links to practitioner sources, current awareness and more. It covers the main topics in English law. You may find it useful for your research, and also when preparing for an interview or placement.

Normally you can access PSL after you log on to Lexis Library, by clicking the chevron at the top left of the Lexis Library home page and using the Services menu. Currently there are some technical issues affecting our access, but there is an alternative route. From the Library home page, select Databases, but instead of accessing Lexis Library directly, click the database name to see information about the database. Take the alternative link to Lexis PSL, select “Academic sign-in”, “View all institutions”, then select University of Warwick and log on.

Lexis simple search

Last year Lexis Library was updated and you can now do a simple search in the Google-style search box on the Lexis home page. You can filter it to look for particular types of material, but the usual connectors do not work, so you may retrieve a lot of results. You can narrow your search further but your results will be more relevant if you use the separate search forms for case law, legislation, journal articles and so on.

If you have not used Lexis Library much or at all, now is a good time to start! It contains material not available in any other database.

Lexis PSL

You can find useful practitioner information on English legal topics in Lexis PSL, available for Warwick students and staff when you log on to Lexis Library. To find it, move your cursor to LexisNexis Services, at the top left, then pick Lexis PSL from the drop-down menu. After that, it is worth the hike... click Academic sign-in, then select UK Access Management Federation, and finally pick University of Warwick, then you are in! Could be useful when you are on a placement, and when you are preparing for interview.

Lexis student website – Law Campus

Writing about web page http://lexisweb.co.uk/lawcampus

Don't miss the Lexis Law Campus website! Features include "Ask a trainer" and useful background information on the Law, plus tips on using Lexis Library effectively. You will also find the option to gain Lexis certification - take the test for this on your own, or with help from the Lexis Student Associate Phillipine Wiegand-Forson. This will help you to use Lexis for research, and will also demonstrate your skills to future employers or if you are seeking a placement.

As with the other database (!), I hope to arrrange a few more sessions with a Lexis trainer later this term, and will advertise them to everyone in due course.

Also useful when on a placement - log on to Lexis and view "LexisNexis services" at the top left, and "Lexis PSL". This provides useful current awareness and practice notes on a wide range of areas of law.

Printing or downloading Lexis articles

If you have any difficulty in printing, downloading or e-mailing material from Lexis Library, it may be due to pop-ups being blocked by your computer. Look out for a message about this on the screen - it is easy to ask for pop-ups to be permitted permanently on this website, and after that there should be no further problem.

Please also be aware that Lexis limits the number of items which may be downloaded from one search to 10. Other databases may also be monitored by the companies providing them, so for example it is not allowed to download one or more e-books in entirety on the same day! Normal downloading is fine, and it is rare for problems to be reported to us, but in extreme cases a company can cut us off without warning and tell us to investigate any possible abuse of copyright :-( You will find information about what is allowed under copyright law in the Library near any photocopier.

Halsbury's Laws – online law encyclopedia

An excellent way to start reserch on any English law topic is to use Halsbury's Laws. This is an authoritative encyclopedia available to us on Lexis Library - you will find a link to it on their Home page in the section on the right, "My Bookshelf". Halsbury's Laws will explain any English legal topic, with links to related legislation and case law, so it is a good way to locate primary sources. If any of the Lexis links fail, you should either use Westlaw to find an online document, or the Library catalogue to locate a printed law report series. If you would like any assistance, please contact Helen Riley, helen.riley@warwick.ac.uk
