My Learning Style

Aim of the Learning Styles activity
  • To enable you to understand your own approach to learning better
  • To adapt your learning strategy to be most effective during your time as a student at Warwick.
  • I had a moderate preference for being an Activist
  • I had a strong preference for being a Reflector
  • I had a strong preference for being a Theorist
  • I had a strong preference for being a Pragmatist

My strongest preference was found to be: Reflector (79%)

I found this quiz to be a fascinating exercise.
I was not surprised that my greatest preference is for being a Reflector, as I know I am a deep thinker, and I have always been the type to overanalyse.
According to 'How Reflectors Learn Best' I am best suited to an unpressured, thoughtful environment where I can observe others and learn from them. I feel this is fairly accurate. I enjoy observing skilled people at work (even when I was younger and was taken to visit glass-blowing factories or potteries, I would stand for hours and watch the craftsmen.)
I have an eye for detail, and after this sort of observation, I tend to remember the skills demonstrated in great detail, and can often reproduce them myself at a later time.
I don't necessarily believe that I don't work well under pressure, especially if the task at hand is an intellectual one, but pressure does unsettle me, and I am more comfortable in a more controlled environment.
As for 'Disadvantages' of being a reflector, I am less in agreement. While it is true that I tend to leave things dormant for a long time, whilst I think them through in great detail, I don't believe the following statements are particularly accurate:
'Donít organise work well'
'Donít like work or revision timetables'
'Only work in bursts of energy'
'Forget to bring key books, etc. for homework'
'Are easily distracted from the job in hand'

It is true to say that I only like to work when I have time enough to sit and concentrate, and I tend to complete assignments in several shorter sessions rather than one large session, I am not disorganised (in fact I am often organised to the point of paranoia,) and I am not forgetful. I re-run sets of instructions in my head many times, so that forgetting them is impossible, and my nature is one that likes to be prepared and in control.

I am definitely not an activist, at least I don't think I am. I believe myself to be quite shy and uncertain, but others seem to perceive me as confident and outgoing. Perhaps the reason for this discrepancy is that I am a perfectionist who judges herself harshly, so instead of seeing a confident person, I see a shy person pretending to be confident.

I think I have 'reflected' quite enough on this activity, though I haven't really scraped the surface of this subject. I cannot decide whether it would be more productive to learn from the insight I have gained to learn in a style that suits me, or to try and develop skills to learn via any of the styles. Maybe this would be asking too much?

I recommend anyone to take this quiz, and a dare you not to be fascinated by the response.
