Photo 1 – holding up the sun

I have really enjoyed the photos from Nath's PhotoBlog so I thought I would put a few of mine up.

I only have a Nikon Coolpix camera but really enjoy trying to take good photos!

This one was taken in Side in Turkey on my family holiday there last summer, the sun set over the sea and was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This photo is of my mum trying to hold the sun in her hands!

Any comments on how to make it better would be appreciated, I don't know much about photography!! And how can I make it appear on here as I see it on my screen? – seems to be a bit pixellated on here!

  1. Cheers the for photoblog pimp Gemma =)
Your photo is great, a really clever use of perspective. I love sunsets as well, especially over the sea, like you saw.

I find the pixelation an issue as well… I resize my photos in paintshop pro to under 1024×768 so the blog software doesn't make a pig's ear of it. If you're sticking the photo straight into the blog then I'd resize them even smaller (600–700 pixels wide) and remove the "?maxwidth=" business, like you've done on this blog. And that should stop them running off the end of the screen!

I look forward to seeing some more of your snaps.

As Nathan says, the best thing to do is to get your image to be a good size for display on a blog before you upload it. We try to avoid the situation where massive images show up in the "Recent entries" screen at a size whch is so big that it doesn't fit on most peoples' screens, but the resizing that Blogs does isn't as good as you'd get using Paint Shop or Photoshop (or Picasa, which is a very nice photo-managing package which is also free), so the best thing is to do your own editing before you upload.

For what it's worth, I can't see the whole of your photo when I look at your blog – my monitor isn't high-res enough, so the right hand side is out of view. Some of the effect is lost if you have to scroll to see the whole photo, I think.

Lovely picture, by the way. Sorry you didn't let it be seen on the Blogs home page.

  3. Pretty pic! I like it, it's well taken. You said "a few of mine" – does this mean there'll be more soon?

  5. Yes hopefully I'll put up some more soon, that is if I can work out how to put them on properly – thanks for the tips, I'm not a computer wizz but will try to work it out! :-)
