Hi, I’m Graeme. I’m 46 years old, married with two school-age children, and I live in Coventry.
I’m a literacy and drama specialist with a degree in English Literature from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and PGCE from Durham University. I began teaching at a comprehensive in County Durham in 1992.
I’ve worked for Coventry Adult Education since 2003, first as English tutor and currently as Literacy Programme Manager supervising provision in venues across the north east of Coventry and line managing tutors. As well as community-based courses, I have delivered work-based training in such diverse settings as an old people’s home, local charity organisations, and a B&Q superstore in the middle of the night! I currently teach three sessions a week, including Literacy through Creative Writing and GCSE English.
I’m also an occasional free-lance writer: with sketches having been performed on BBC radio and TV. One of my scripts reached the finals of the Talent 2000 competition. I also contributed a chapter to an academic psychology reader: Working with Anger: A Constructivist Approach (Wiley, 2006).
I’m looking forward to this course because I believe assessment is absolutely bottom-line in the work we do in Adult Education – and will only increase in importance in the future. My dream is to find a way of synthesising the learner-centred ethos of my teaching with a genuinely valid and reliable way of measuring achievement and learning. I hope that isn’t going to take as long as searching for the Holy Grail …
