PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT USING SIX SIGMA

Another day another module. Having been studying excellence and the importance of involving leadership and people in all business activities and as far as is sensibly possible, decisions, it was a bit of a surprise to start looking into six sigma which although advertised as a total qaulity concept and philosophy for improving the entire organisation, seems to go back to time and motion studies. There is a huge reliance on statistical analysis leading change and very little on how that change should be communicated to the workers who actually have to make it work. Early days but I feel somewhat sceptical that on its own it offers as much as say, W Edwards Deming's concepts of excellence or Baldrige or the EFQM excellence model. Perhaps the answer for the time being is to think about six sigma as a tool that offers part of the solution when used under the umbrella of Excellence in the same way that ISO 9000:2000 offers a starting point and a few useful tools.

More to come on this I think.
