Derek Walcott
I cam across this poem of Walcott's and was compelled to share it:
Love After Love
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Wow this is cool. I bought a lot of second hand books of poetry the other day, wish I knew about Walcott then.

Thom said Derek Walcott's coming to Cov to do a reading very soon! I can't remember when it is, but I think it's this month… I'd be so very up for that since I think his poetry is indeed the business, tho I've yet to read Omeros. Good choice Sho!

It's really beautiful. I love poems that can move you without you quite knowing why…
hope you're having a great Easter. See you soon.

Walcott is a professor here at Boston University and I got a chance to hear him read some of his poetry last fall. He is a wonderful speaker and has great stories to tell. If you get the chance to hear him read, I highly recommend attending!

Sadly, there was a problem with his Visa (or so I heard), so he didn't speak on 29 March as planned…
