Logging in problems? Password not recognised

If you try and log into EndNote Web and get the message that your username and password is incorrect, even when you know you typed the correct information, it might be because EndNote is accessing an old version of the login page stored in your web browser's cache.

To get round this problem, you just need to clear the cache which you can do as follows:

Internet Explorer Users:

  1. Click on the Tools option in the menu bar at the top of the Internet Explorer screen.
  2. Click on Internet Options.
  3. Click on the Delete Cookies button and wait for it to finish.
  4. Click on the Delete Files button and wait for it to finish.
  5. Click on OK.

Firefox Users

  1. Click on the Tools option in the menu bar at the top of the Firefox screen.
  2. Click on Clear Private Data.
  3. Click on the Clear Private Data button and wait for it to finish.

Entering names of groups and Organisations

If you try and enter the name of an organization in the Author field, you may find it looks strange when you come to format your bibliography.

For example, typing World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) as the author would  be displayed as W.W.W. (W3C) in your bibliography.

There's a very simple way to make it display correctly: simply add a comma at the end of the author. So, in the example above, type:

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C),

This fools EndNote Web into thinking that everything before the comma is the author's second name. As such, it will now display properly in your bibliography or reference list.

Macs, Word 2008 and Cite While You Write

If you are using a Mac with Word 2008 installed, you will find you are unable to use the Cite While You Write as it is not currently compatible. This is a known issue and Adept Science are working on an update.

In the meantime, if you have a document which you have already contains EndNote Web references and you want to format it, you can do so using the following instructions:

  1. Open your document in Word 2004 or X
  2. In the Cite While You Write toolbar, click the Unformat Citations icon (the one with a red curved arrow pointing downwards).
  3. Save the document as an RTF file (not as a .doc or docx file).
  4. Log in to EndNote Web and click on the Format tab.
  5. Click on Format Paper.
  6. Click the Browse button and find and select the file you have just saved.
  7. Select the required referencing style from the list (e.g. Harvard).
  8. Click Format.  After a short delay, you will be given the option to open or save the new file.

Note: if you are working with a document and need to add references to it, you can do this by entering them in the following format:

{author name, year} e.g. {Speight, 2008}

To format the bibliography, you can then follow steps 3-8 above.

My EndNote Web toolbar is not responding

A few people have reported a problem where their EndNote Web toolbar is not working. Clicking on a button does not produce an error message, but nothing happens.  This may be due to other programs (or add-ins) installed in Word which stop the toolbar from working properly.

If this happens, close Word, open up Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup and delete any add-ins which might be causing a problem. Add-ins known to cause a conflict include the following:

  • SnagIt
  • Copernic Agent
  • Adobe/Macromedia FlashPaper
  • Adobe Contribute C3
  • ScanSoft/Nuance PaperPort or PDF Create!
  • MSWordXML
  • EZPhoto
  • Workshare
