Using Keywords to identify references with a common theme

If you want to be able to find lots of references which all have the same theme quickly and easily, you can add your own keywords to identify them.

For example, if you quickly want to be able to identify all the references that are to do with macroeconomics, you can type Macroeconomics in the Research Notes field in the Endnote Web record for individual references. When you want to find all the references to do with macroeconomics, simply type this into the Quick Search box in EndNote Web or into the Find Citation(s) box in the EndNote Web toolbar in Word.

The Research Notes field can also be used to add your own comments or notes on a particular reference.

Temporarily disabling Zotero

If you have both EndNote Web and Zotero (a free, web-based reference management programme) running on your computer, you might sometimes find that when you try and download a file for EndNote Web, Zotero intercepts it instead. If this happens, you may need to temporarily disable the Zotero plug in. Follow these instructions to do this:

Firefox Users

  1. Click on the Tools menu.
  2. Select Add-ons.
  3. Find the entry for Zotero and click the Disable button.
  4. Close down the Add-ons window.

Note: you may need to restart your browser before these changes take effect.

IngentaConnect – importing references to your EndNote Web account

Note: To import references from IngentaConnect into your EndNote Web account, you need to do the following:

Stage One: Saving references in IngentaConnect

  1. Do your search in IngentaConnect as normal.
  2. Click on Export options on the right of the screen.
  3. Select Plain text from the list which appears.
  4. A new window opens containing the references you found.
  5. In your web browser click File > Save as (or Save Page As in Firefox).
  6. When the Save box appears, save the file as normal. Make sure that the File Type option is set to Text File (*.txt).
  7. Click on the Save button.

Note: this will save all the references you found in your search, not just ones you have marked as relevant. For this reason, it is recommended that you import your references into a specific folder in Stage Two. This will make it easier for you to view the references and delete any you do not want to keep.

Stage 2: Importing references into EndNote Web

  1. In your EndNote Web account, click on the Collect tab.
  2. Select Import References.
  3. From the Filter drop-down menu, select IngentaConnect.
