Using EndNote with other word processors

Although the Cite While You Write plug-in only works with Microsoft Word, it is still possible to format your bibliography using a different word processor, such as Open Office.  To do this:

  1. Create your document as normal.
  2. When you wish to insert a reference, type {author's second name, Year} e.g. {Beardwell, 2007}.
  3. Save your document as a Rich Text Format (.RTF) file.
  4. Log in to EndNote Web and click the Format Tab and select Format Paper.
  5. Click on the Browse button and select the file you saved in step 3.
  6. Under Bibliographic Style, select the referencing style required (e.g. Harvard).
  7. Click the Format  button.
  8. You will then be given the option to either view or save your formatted document

  2. Hi Suzanne,

I have managed to get it working with EndNote and Open Office, as well as EndNote Web. The procedure for EndNote is as follows:

    1. Create your document and references as described in Steps 1-3 above.
    2. In EndNote, click Tools > Format Paper > Format Paper
    3. Select the file you created in Step 1 (you will need to have closed it in Open Office before you can do this)
    4. A box displaying the number of matching citations appears.
    5. Select the referencing style you want from the drop down menu labelled Output Style (if it’s not available, choose Select Another Style to view the full list).
    6. Click the Format button.
    7. Save the file when prompted.
    8. Open up your word processor and view the file.

Thanks for this. I’ve been teaching Endnote at Brighton University for a while now. One of the questions I frequently get asked is how you can import your references from a Word bibliography to your Endnote library. Is this something that’s cropped up at Warwick? The instructions in the manual seem impossibly complicated.
