Use or Abuse

I've never quite understood the phrase "drug abuse", surely you are being abused by the drugs (your body and mind at least). Let’s see if throwing some definitions into the mix helps at all

use
v. used, us•ing, us•es
v. tr.
1.To put into service or apply for a purpose;
2.To avail oneself of; practice: use caution.
3.To conduct oneself toward; treat or handle: “the peace offering of a man who once used you unkindly” (Laurence Sterne).
4.To seek or achieve an end by means of; exploit: used their highly placed friends to gain access to the president; felt he was being used by seekers of favor.
5.To take or consume; partake of: She rarely used alcohol.

a•buse
tr.v. a•bused, a•bus•ing, a•bus•es
1.To use wrongly or improperly; misuse:.
2.To hurt or injure by maltreatment; ill-use.
3.To force sexual activity on; rape or molest.
4.To assail with contemptuous, coarse, or insulting words; revile.
5.Obsolete. To deceive or trick.

Hmm, it would seem to me that the lines between drug use and drug abuse are quite blurred. It is all down to personal interpretation. As the person is indeed applying the drug to their system for a purpose, however it could be seen as maltreating the body.
Also, does the amount of drug use directly relate to the level of drug abuse. Furthermore is the use of Calpol just to make you sleep an abuse, but taking some crazy drug for the reason is was designed and manufactured drug use?

So next time you’re walking through the streets of Coventry, South RLS, or Newport please take a moment to question the so called drug abusing public what their take on the matter is.

Disclaimer: Any abuse/loss of limbs caused by carrying out the above is completely your fault! Plus you probably deserve it for being a numptee

  1. I personally see abuse of drugs not as a personal but more of a social problem. As in you are abusing drugs when you start to damage friendships or treat others in an abusive or unpleasant manner as a result of taking a substance. So i as many will have seen far worse abuse of substances like alcohol and tabaco than that of illegal drugs.

I'm not exactly disagreeing with you in what I say next, eventhough it made sound that way. I also realise that situations aren't always clear cut. However…

By your reckoning, a person who is without friends and stays away from the public at large (possibly due to mass paranoia and lack of motivation, brought on by the use of drugs) would not be abusing drugs.

Or, say an alcoholic whos personality when drinking is entertaining and non-invasive to those around them, wouldn't be abusing the drugs.

I think there is a serious social implication with any form of abuse, but to quantify drug abuse by its affects on others I think is slightly fool hardy.

  3. I am not saying that drugs are only bad for you in the way it affects others, what i mean is that i think its up to us to choose how we treat our body. It may be extremely dangerous to do so but if we didnt have the freedom of our bodies then there would be point (for me at least) in living. I am not saying really that to use drugs isnt to misuse them – i mean that use/abuse are basically different words for using and i think that although drugs of all sorts can be devastating that if you can maintain a reasonable balance in use then it is fine. Some peoples balance on sometings should be the balance of not taking at all – but it seems odd to critiscise stoners for not taking in moderation when many people have far too much alcohol far too regularly.

But you do make a very good point, of course my views are completely subjective.
