It is 4.23am, I did not even drink tonight.
Truly you are mistaken.
I never loved you, it was just hate
drugged by a little ecstasy,
sympathy.
You cannot blame yourself
for being fooled.
So was my intoxicated mind,
my hasty lips
that uttered those damning words.
Fate is so curious, so cruel.
Georgina Aldridge
I feel I want to steal every poem you’re doing at the moment, because it’s like you’ve given voice to my heart. I am not just saying this because I know you and call you a friend, they’re honestly fantastic. I love the attitude of this poem, you can hear the defiance and contempt in the speaker, I love the line about the love just being hate mixed with ecstasy and sympathy. That is just so perfect. That is so true. Perfectly captures the intensity of love and then the realisation after that it was anything but-and that you were both fooled. I like the indifference at the end, seems whimsical, the sort of thing you’d say with the edge of your lip curling a little at the end. I wish I could be so bold as your poetry!
