Encouraged and motivated after my last trip to the velodrome in January, I contacted Halesowen cycling club to find out more about track racing. They were really helpful and friendly and let me join in their track session at Newport last weekend.
I got there late so no time to be nervous this time, just straight on the bike and straight onto the track with a group of strangers and straight up onto the blue line... no faffing about like I normally do! (normally I faff about riding slowly around the black line whilst I try to calm my nerves and convince myself I will be ok!)
The first session was a great session with really confidence inspiring riders - I still couldnt seem to hold a wheel though. I can do it just fine on a TT on the road but on the track, I just couldn't seem to get it right.
We did a few more sessions with drills getting used to swapping positions and weaving in and out of the other riders which helped my confidence some more. The highlight of the evening for me though was getting the chance to try a kilo pursuit starting on the track being held up by one of the coaches... I NEVER thought a kilo could seem so far! One of the juniors told me that about 2.5 laps into it my legs would burn and I would really feel it... how right they were! I could feel myself slowing and I couldn't do much about it. Lap 4 was great though as you know your nearly finished.... That feeling of riding as fast as you can hurtling around the black line is absolutely awesome. I think I tried so hard the black line became a blurred black line as I got a bit tunnel vision!
I'm sure I didn't set the world on fire with my first kilo but I loved it.... I loved the whole track session and can't wait to go again.
