Buying furniture

Follow-up to I want to go shopping… from For blog's sake

Yay! I bought a new sofa for my flat on Saturday…

Sofa

Decided on brown instead of red as it would be more versatile and allow me to be more colourful with my accessories : )

Just need to buy a bed, TV and fridge/freezer now… Oh, and send a rather large cheque to the solicitors else I won’t be moving at all!

  1. That’s from DFS, isn’t it? Corner group, room for the whole troup? I saw far too much of the DFS advert. I apologise!

Helen – I hate to say… it’s not from DFS. And I haven’t got a whole troup either – will just be for little me although admittedly it could fit a whole troup! It’s actually from Argos.

Yeah, it was a great sofa but it didn’t fit through the door!! Have been waiting six weeks for a new sofa that is just as great (I think!)

Love the sofa! I just bought some great modern Entertainment furniture from a place called I Like Furniture.com. Their prices are pretty decent, and I love this pub table they have that seats 6 people, so I’m thinking of buying it too! You might want to check them out!

Hi, never buy a sofa from DFS!! I bought two sofas (three bed seat and two seat) on the 1st January when everything was on SALE. Got a good price, loan interest free for 2 years, the sofas looked great. I also wondered if the two sofas could get through my door, and asked to the shop assistant: do these sofas come in one piece or de-assembled? The answer was that they came in one piece, but not to loose the sale, the vendor also told me: ‘However we do have an offer that for free we could come to your place, take all measurements and only if our people will say that the sofas can actually be delivered the contract will be binding otherwise it’ll be void.’. Fine I thought. A couple of weeks later these two guys from DFS came to my place, took all measures and told me: ‘Yeah, it can be delivered’. Two weeks ago I received a call from DFS that informed me that actually the sofas were ready for delivery. I was given only one option: it’s either on Monday or on Monday (please note that the call arrived on Friday afternoon!). Ok, I took a day off work and on Monday other two guys from DFS came to deliver the sofas. Guess what? The three seat couldn’t get through. I then complained, called DFS and asked my money back, at which point a clerk told me that there has been an error, that the people who delivered didn’t know that apparently the armchair could be taken off and that they would eventually call me back to arrange a new delivery. Friday last week I didn’t hear from anyone so I decided to make the first move. I was then told that they would be delivering on Tuesday (today). Fine I thought, finally I’ll get my sofas. So I took another day off; this morning I waited and waited and when at 10am I didn’t hear from anyone I made the first move again. I was then told that the delivery was for today and that I was first on the list. I waited and waited…At 11 I made a second call asking why the only sofas I could see were the ones visible through my neighbours windows and if they were sure the delivery was for today. I was told that yes, the delivery was for today and that probably the two drivers were stuck in the traffic and that if I didn’t hear from anyone by noon I should have called back so that they could chase the drivers up. At 12.30 I called back, this time talking to a different person, who in few words told me: ‘Apologies, but it looks like there has been an error in our systems…Actually to take that armchair off it requires a very highly skilled person and I’m sorry but it’s not going to be today’. At which point I threatened to ask my money back and to sue them. The person was then apologetic and asked if instead of going down that path maybe we could come to an agreement where they would organize a special delivery on a Saturday and give me some allowance for all the trouble I went through. Fine I thought! Although the service is the worse I experienced so far at least the fellows recognize their mistakes and are ready to pay for them. I naturally accepted, agreeing on this person to call me back with an offer. This afternoon I received a phone call from a manager at DFS who in few words said:

‘I’m really sorry for what happened, we usually don’t do this bad. Do you think that taking off the bed mechanism from the three seat sofa would solve the problem?’. I mean you are a manager at DFS and you ask ME such quesion? Luck wanted that when the two guys tried to deliver the sofa the previous Monday they already tried that escamotage, so I knew that it didn’t work and I said this to the guy (luckily I probably saved other 3 months of hell for another attempted delivery).

In the end I just decided to get my money back and to run in the opposite direction whenever I’ll se a DFS shop again!

Oh no Marco – that sounds pretty bad. Luckily the service from Argos was much better than that. They delivered it on a week day but they came at the date and approximate time that they said. They also tried really hard to get it through the door. Two delivery men and my Dad really tried to force it but with no luck. They then just loaded it back on the van and took it away with them and later that day I got a call from Argos to ask whether I wanted a different sofa or my money back. Also, it was more my fault than theirs that it didn’t fit – apparently the sofa I ordered was the biggest one they do and I live in a first floor flat so I guess there wasn’t much chance of getting it in! I ended up getting a sofa from SCS and they were also very good – the usual wait for a sofa was 10 weeks but they hurried it along because I explained that I was sofa-less and it came in 6 weeks. Good luck with getting a new one!

Lovely Sofa Helen and sorry to hear about your problems Marco we recently bought some office furniture from a web based company who let us down quite badly and I vowed I would never buy from the internet again, However we recently purchased a second office and my wife placed a large order for office furniture with a web based company Saxen Office Furniture and the level of service recieved was excellent. I would recommend them to anyone as this is the best internet shopping experience I have ever had. Anyway Helen I love the sofa very similar to what were looking for so have bookmarked you site for my wife to have a look, and once again sorry to hear about your problems Marco.

It could be worse Marco as there was a news announcement today that quite a few people have bought leather sofas at Argos and have had a bad skin reaction to the leather and are considering taking legal action. Argos pointed out that the sofa came from a particular manufacturer and other retailers were affected. You can get some real bargains on the internet for home furniture and office furniture . It is a little known fact that non-business consumers actually have more protection online than when buying from a local store thanks to the EU distance selling regulations. Having said that you still have to get the suppliers to resolve any problems you may have so it try calling the company before buying to check them out.

I decided that I needed to get some new furniture so spent the day walking round all the major retailers. I got sick and tired of smarmy sales men harrasing me so that they could earn their commision, when I finaly found something I liked I was told it would take 12-14 weeks for delivery, that was enough for me so I went home.
When I got home I found an online retailer http://www.furnituremania.co.uk selling the exact same product at a fraction of the price and I had it in my house by the end of the week. They delivered it free unlike the other place who wanted £60. I hate sopping at the best of times but glad I didn’t have to go round all the shops again. I would recommend Furniture Mania to anyone

Nice design but I have to say that I really really like metal furniture, it just has a far more pronounced feel in the room, especially in open plan type living spaces where its easy to have no clear focal points because all the materials blend together. Metal just automatically feels like the centrepiece of the room.
