Amusement

Interesting/amusing things that have happened in the PGCE so far:

  • Been far too excited over wearing a proper labcoat.
  • ...and rocks.
  • ...and UV bead bracelets.
  • ...and making a river.
  • Extracted DNA from a friend of mine Kiwi.
  • Seen my own cheek cells.
  • Been the Earth's crust (well, formation of)
  • The Earth's crust singing.
  • Watching the Earth (formation of) get a running commentry on where the rest of the class were.
  • Modelled a solid, liquid and gas in the middle of a lecture theatre.
  • LABCOAT!
  • Grown E. Coli and other things that can kill you.
  • Had the most glorious lie in ever... until 8.30.
  • Been directions person.
  • Had a yellow hat (lined paper with YELLOW on the front, I was far too excited about it).
  • Being told I have a nice voice.
  • Discovered the course books are much easier to read than physics ones.
  • Accumulated a small tree in handouts.
  • Been hyper, awake and writing a CV at 8.30 in the morning. On campus. Not even kidding.

Science reflective journal – week2

Writing about web page http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/wie/teaching/pgce/secondary/subjects/science/outline/week_2

While I find reflection and thinking easy, blogs are less so, particularly when I look at the prompts given. We have learnt a lot about planning certainly, the importance of it, methods to do so and what goes into making a good lesson.

The thing is, that’s not the most important thing this week. Every so often in my notes you’ll come across a * next to a point. These are not ordinary points, they’re either very important things or unrelated thoughts, well, I say unrelated. They’re actually thoughts and notes about what I want to see in my classroom.
-Poster on wall with what I expect/will give back?
-Spiral curriculum poster
Among others.

As for things I still have to do…
- Wait for reply on what my TRN number is so I can book the skills tests.
- ... or maybe send another e-mail from my regular account, I have a horrible feeling the first may have been eaten by the wonder that is the university e-mail account (again)
- Lesson plan SCT1, in for the 8th I believe.
- CCT2, in for the 15th.
- Tutorial 2? When does that have to be done by anyway?
- Get some sleep… nah, that one isn’t important ;)

Science reflective journal – week1

Writing about web page http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/wie/teaching/pgce/secondary/subjects/science/outline/week_1

This first week of the PGCE has been… packed to say the least. Packed with new names and faces, handouts, forms, lectures and IT problems, I’m just glad that I did the SAS in my second year so that a lot of the material was vaguely familiar!

What’s really interesting to see is the sheer variety of backgrounds and people that have applied for the PGCE here. I’ve come here straight from doing my degree here, so I’m not only younger than most people here but I’ve only ever experienced the academic life, and it’s strange (but reassuring in a way) to hear that work outside education is often as boring as I thought.

But then if they’d had a good experience they wouldn’t have come to the PGCE to try and make a difference to people’s lives, and at the end of the day isn’t what we all want out of teaching? To actually make a difference to people’s lives and in a small way leave our mark on this world? It’s a big responsibility, but one I’m willing to take.

The course is going to be hard, no doubt about that, but I should hope I find the time to enjoy it despite the work I’m given!

On that note, I’m going to leave you with the fact I’m still wearing the UV bead bracelet we made this morning, My watch broke last year and my wrist’s felt far too light since. Also it goes pretty colours when outside, that has to be a good thing.
