The Fall – The Robin 2, Wolverhampton 05/03/07 – Gig Review by Phil Richards

Why change a winning formula?

I went to see the Fall this week at the Robin 2 in Bilston, Wolverhampton. Supported by a band I hadn’t come across before – Now Assassin – I was hopeful of a brilliant night.

Now Assassin:

A cool indie rock outfit, Now Assassin consisted of four musicians and one dude standing in the middle of the stage bobbing his head and trying to look cool. I don’t know why but that fella in the middle just made the gig. From his first appearance of shouting at the audience through a megaphone, to him raising alternative pingpong bats with A) and B) written on them he really caught the imagination of the crowd. The music was awesome, and although playing to a fairly elderly audience, got many of them tapping toes and bouncing heads. If you get the chance a definite recommendation.

The Fall:

Like the band themselves, the fans of the Fall are starting to get on in years a bit, so I wasn’t expecting a surging, moshing crowd when the band started. How wrong could I be? To inspire this kind of reaction is a true indication of the power of this bands music and influence. Though they have never made “The Big Time” these guys have been around for ages, and inspired devotion from their fans because of such great songs as we heard that night. Admittedly towards the end of the evening the songs became a little sameish, but I ask, why change a winning formula?

One note of humour in the gig; it was Mark E Smith (lead singer of the Fall)’s birthday. 50 on Monday. And by the time he got on stage he was already blotto. There were three mikes on the stage and he could never make up his mind which one he was singing into.

The Fratellis – Birmingham Academy 27/02/07 – Gig Review by Andy Glyde

I came out of the Carling Academy Birmingham on Tuesday night knowing that I had just been to an absolutely awesome gig. My body ached all over, having had my feet trampled on, elbows in my back and kicked in the head by crowd surfers more times than I cared to remember. I felt as though I had lost at least half a stone from perspiration. My ears were ringing; my eyes were sore; it had definitely been a fantastic gig.

But then that was exactly what I was expecting from the three Glasgow lads with a strangely-sounding Italian name. The bouncy, catchy indie rock that the Fratellis have championed so well over the past year was performed with such energy and enthusiasm that every ounce of pain that I experienced for that hour was smothered with the euphoria of such a wonderful band. Playing all of their songs from their album, Costello Music, including the likes of Chelsea Dagger, Creepin Up The Backstairs, Whistle for the Choir, as well as their new single, Baby Fratelli and the their song from the new iPod adverts, Flathead, this band performed confidently and seemed completely at ease on stage.

It really helped that they had a brilliant support band who warmed the crowd up nicely. Local boys, The Enemy, showed exactly why they are being touted as the best Oasis-esque band since the big boys themselves. From the off, they performed strongly, getting the crowd going with their catchy tunes and four-letter ravings between songs.

After such a strong performance, the Fratellis had a lot to live up to. But they definitely managed it. A gig I will remember for the rest of my life, if not for the music, then for the lump on my head after being struck with a beer glass!

Talk Taxis / GoodBooks / The Maccabees – Live gig review by Rob Lowe

The Maccabees are a band that are, well… down right cool. Playing to a sold out crowd of crazy 16 year olds, and with anthems as big as “Latchmere”, a song completely written about a new wave machine at the aforementioned place, the night at the Carling Academy 2 was going to be all about fun.

I always feel sorry for support bands at gigs as they are usually ignored and just play out their set for the fun of it. ‘Talk Taxis’ had a different idea and certainly show signs of promise. Their lead singer has a voice that is quite distinct and made even the annoying 16 year old girls take notice. The music seems derived from a ska nature and certainly isn’t lost against the singers vocals. Next up were Goodbooks who have been strenuously touring the country, previously with Hot Club De Paris. These boys are pop, simply put; they play funky keyboard driven indie which is pleasant and enjoyable. The band played a flawless set and even verse into one of The Maccabees songs mid way through which the crowd seem to enjoy.

Then came the main event and with the entrance of the band came the quick rush forward of people and the general over excitement that this band can muster in you. The music is so catchy and upbeat that you just simply cannot stand still, and straight away the whole crowd was bouncing, to such an extent that it made the floor move. If the crowd weren’t excited enough the band played “Latchmere” early on and even they seemed surprised by the response from the crowd. Playing a variety of new songs mixed in with well known singles of “X-ray”, “Precious Time” and “Bicycles”, the tempo never stopped right the way through to the end. The lead singer then announced that they would be going off stage to get a drink and rest before returning to finish off. Apparently they weren’t being arrogant they were just really tired. Either way they returned to finish “First Love”, again to more stomping 16 year olds. Overall the night was pretty awesome and The Maccabees live are impressive. With a faithful crowd of, yep you guessed it, 16 year olds, I am sure they will go far.

The Albums of 2001

The RaW music team are currently in the process of creating a brand new feature for Comapct Disco, RaW’s weekly music show broadcast every Wednesday between 5 and 7 p.m. However we need your help.

Every week we pick a specific year from the last four decades and showcasing three albums released in that year. Listeners and participants in the studio will then be able to vote for whichever album of the three they believe is the greatest.

With some years there are three albums which clearly standout. In other years it is much harder to reduce the list of albums to three and that is where you come in. Below is a shortlist of classic albums released in 2001 and we want your comments on which album you think is the best or most iunfluential and why. The three records with the most votes will be included in the feature which will be broadcast during a future edition of Compact Disco. (Also if you are a RaW member you can head you can vote in the poll directly by going to the ‘Music’ section of the RaW forums)

Paulo Nutini Review (Phil Richards)

Paolo Nutini, the new singer songwriting talent from Paisley in Scotland, provided an enjoyable and monstrously popular performance in Biormingham, having gained such notoriety from his first single “Last Request” and continued success from “Jenny don’t be hasty” that he had to be upgraded from the Barfly to the bigger venue Sanctuary (just round the corner from Barfly) and still sold out. His gravely, soulfilled voice provided a beautiful chorus of his own material from his album “These Streets” including the incredibly touching “Autumn” about his Grandad, whilst intjecting a few memorable covers as well, from “Day for a Daydream” and his take on “Crazy”. This being the second time I have seen him this Summer, I have to say a consistently good performer, and would recommend him to anyone who can get tickets.
