Fear University

Fear University by Meg Collett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fantastic concept with likeable, well established, and broken characters. The story is gripping and comparatively action packed. Very much like the "Divergent" series, but with a darker story and in my opinion better characters.

I do have one quibble, there's an action scene near the end which is awfully edited/written. The rest is great which makes this scene stand out. The scene is choppy and doesn't seem to be chronological in sequence. I think if this was fixed I'd have given 5 stars.

Even still I'm looking forward to reading the next, the story has me hooked.

Romantic Suspense Done Right

Stoking the Embers (Embers, #1)Stoking the Embers by Leslie Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Easily the best romantic/erotic/thriller fiction I has read. Ken and Steph are just so compelling, and the story itself is edge of seat gripping. This is so good I bought and finished the next one straight after finishing it. Generally when a book makes me cry within the first 5 minutes of reading, it goes on my favorites shelf. It has all the right elements.

Strange Dystopian Fiction

The CarThe Car by Jude Fawley
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Maybe I'm too stupid, but I don't get this story. I really liked the concept and a couple of the characters were intriguing, but I want to know more. What happened to the world? Why is everyone stupid and not curious? Everything feels incomplete, which could be the point, but I just don't feel like I got much out of reading this. there's also quite a few typos, and some bad grammar. I hate to be nit-picky, but it annoys me a little.

Life Before Modern Medicine: The Scary Reality

MalignedMaligned by Jude Fawley
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A scary journey into the world before modern medicine, where people who appear to be helping are actually killing customers and patients alike, through ignorance and arrogance. I liked the very flawed nature of the main characters involved. The ideas behind the story are interesting and well thought out. Unfortunately, the story itself isn't great it doesn't feel complete as a reader. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the slightly factual scary nature of Maligned.

Solar Power

I really hoped this book would cover some of the more practical and legal requirements for installing solar power (either by panels or thermal heating) into your home. Unfortunately, all the concepts discussed are basic and badly explained. I really want to learn more about the solar power business sector. There's just so many things that the book could talk about, in depth and clearly, that it doesn't, and that for me is a huge shame.

Solar Power: The Viable Energy Solution for Your HomeSolar Power: The Viable Energy Solution for Your Home by Jesse Durfee
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This is an extremely brief overview of solar cells. As a beginners guide, it doesn't do anything well. Concepts are not well introduced or explained, I'm currently working in this field, and even for me, there's not much solid information here. What it does give are places to start looking for more specific queries on using solar power in your house. But honestly these could probably all be found in a Wikipedia article. It doesn't cover the science of a solar cell, or how to set up a system. People that are interested in doing these things would probably already know the majority of the information this book contains.

Shadow Unit 8

I've never read a series that has felt as real, or made me cry as much as this one has. It's dark and it's gritty and it's so good.

This series doesn't pull punches when it comes to emotional content. the drama just feel sso real. I wish they would stop drawing out the story though, I'm burning through money :)

I don't think this story will ever get old. The characters and their struggles are just so compelling and real. I just want to read more.

Graveyard Shift

I've tried to find a few more fun things to read. And I guess my sense of humour is a little black, as this counts as fun. Joking aside, I really did enjoy this story.

Graveyard Shift (Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc., #1)Graveyard Shift by Angela Roquet
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A fun story, great characters and a decent if underdeveloped plot. This is a really solid start to a series. Characters are well established, as is the bases for a good series. What's missing is more depth to the drama aspects of the book. It's lacking just a little bit of punch. There's a lot of good stuff here too, an interesting world, emphasis on cool characters, I love the old Gods theme, and the attention to detail in the story itself, there's a few inaccuracies in some details, but the narrative itself is detailed and interesting.

Appearance Changes

So I'm playing with the appearance of my blog. I figured that since Warwick has changed its branding; I would too. Since this is a university blog I only have a few designs to choose from, but let me know what you think, and I will take people's opinions into consideration.

Political Thriller

The Foundation: Jack Emery 1The Foundation: Jack Emery 1 by Steve P. Vincent
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For a political thriller, this didn't go very deep. There's a lot of really good story and action to be had here though which makes up for the lack of depth. Characters are well developed but honestly the story is just a touch predictable for my liking. I think some of the scenes could have done with a touch more depth.

The Foundation is like watching a really good action movie, you are involved while its happening and its enjoyable, but you're not reliving the scenes later on remembering the thoughts and feelings. It's a fun read, but could do with just a touch more to make it an awesome one.
