  • Bobby Womack – California Dreamin'

  • Cliff Richard & The Young Ones – Living Doll (Guilty Pleasure track which we had to fade out 2 minutes early for being an atrocity)
  • Rage Against the Machine – Renegades of Funk
  • Belle & Sebastian – I'm Waking Up to Us

And because i've been so behind, here's this week's Mattanory story too. This is The Escape by Matthew Briant, aged 8:

One bright sunny day I went to Chessington World of Adventures. It was great my favourite ride was Professor Burps Bubbleworks. When I was on the Fifth Dimension I heard a voice which said, "We have an imprtant announcement to make, the strongest wolf in the country has just escaped from the animal department." Suddenly after the message there was a loud screaming sound and a growl that sounded like a wolf. As soon as the announcement was over everyone ran away from the rides, but i didn't possibly think the wolf could get on the ride after all I am a kid. But when I got off the ride there in front of me was the biggest wolf i had ever seen. I felt so scared that I nearly screamed. Quickly two men from the animal department came running towards me with a huge net to catch the wolf in. The wolf was just about to leap on me when the men threw the net and caught the wolf. Then the men took the wolf to a stronger cage and this time they put two padlocks on the cage.

Teacher's comments: "I'm sure you could have written a better story Matthew." No gold stars for me that day. She was probably pissed off with the fact that I upped the word count by calling the zoo an animal department. Oh well, hey-ho.

Guilty Pleasure: Donkey Punch – Thursday 1–3pm on RaW 1251AM

Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk

This is the english translation of the lyrics of this week's Guilty Pleasure track, Rock Me Amadeus by Falco, if you're interested:-

Ooo rock me Amadeus
Rock me Amadeus…
Rock rock rock rock me Amadeus
Rock me all the time to the top

He was a Punker
And he lived in the big city
It was Vienna, was Vienna
Where he did everything
He had debts, for he drank
But all the women loved him
And each one shouted:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

He was Superstar
He was popular
He was so exalted
Because he had flair
He was a virtuose
Was a rock idol
And everyone shouted:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Come on and rock me Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

It was around 1780
And it was in Vienna
No plastic money anymore
The banks against him
From which his debts came
It was common knowledge
He was a women's man
Women loved his punk

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus

Come and rock me Amadeus…

Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Yes yes yes
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me
Baby baby do it to me rock me

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus…

So there we have it; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a punk and rock idol. I love the idea that he was exalted due to his flair, and women loved his punk! An 's' short there methinks.

The Elastic Band Challenge – Donkey Punch: Thursday 1–3pm on RaW 1251AM

Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk

On Thursday's Elastic Band Challenge John faced questions on the Pet Shop Boys with an elastic band aimed at his forehead. I'm delighted to say he got two questions wrong earning him a slap in the face for each of them. Unfortunately he got one correct, thus avoiding an extra slap for being a dumbass. His questions were as follows:-

1. The Pet Shop Boys produced the song I'm Not Scared for which '80s band?
a) 8th Wonder
b) Heaven 17
c) ABC

2. What is Neil Tennant's big phobia?
a) Aquaphobia
b) Claustraphobia
c) Arachnophobia
or is he just really scared of dogs?

3. What is the name of the only film to feature the duo?
a) Rent
b) It Couldn't Happen Here
c) Love Comes Quickly

Any ideas? Then comment on this entry.

The Elastic Band Challenge Leaderboard now looks like this:-

1. Neon: Played 3. Qs correct 5. Slaps 4. All right/wrong difference 0. Slap difference +1
2. John: Played 3. Qs correct 4. Slaps 5. All right/wrong diff 0. Slap diff -1
3. Matt: Played 3. Qs correct 2. Slaps 7. All right/wrong diff -1. Slap diff -5

I've got some catching up to do! Hopefully Neon will get his comeuppance next week when he answers questions about Guns n' Roses. Tune in on Thursday at 1pm to find out.

Mattanory – Donkey Punch: Thursday 1–3pm on RaW 87.7FM

Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk

Yesterday's Mattanory story was an old favourite making a welcome return. Read out over the top of the Godfather love theme. This is 'The Magic Lake' by Matthew Briant aged 9. Beautiful…

Once upon a time there was a crowd of people running away from a very tall giant called Wolf Head. He was called Wolf Head because his head was shaped like a wolf's head. Everyone was running except for one girl who was walking along quietly because she was walking behind Wolf Head. Just then there was a "OUCH" Wolf Head had steped on a thorn. As he fell back, the girl just ran under Wolf Head's legs. As Wolf Head was on the floor with his mouth wide open the girl pored in three doses of sleeping poshon and said, "He will be sleeping for twentyfour hours."
Then everyone dragged him to two lakes. One of the lakes was a magic lake and the girl knew which lake it was and that was the lake on the right so they pushed the giant in to the lake and a very strange thing happed. The giant came out very small and everything was fine.

Tomorrow an update of the Elastic Band Challenge leaderboard.

Donkey Punch – Thursday 17th February 2005

Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk

Today's 'Don't Fear the 80s' Donkey Punch Special (harking back to an old feature where we played good 80's tunes) went very well. The thinking today, then, was simple; most of the tunes were gems from the 1980s, with the odd exception. If you didn't tune in, boooo! But if you did, ta very much. Here's the full 80's heavy playlist:

  • The Cult – She Sells Sanctuary from 1985
  • Soft Cell – Tainted Love from 1981
  • Mercury Rev – In a Funny Way
  • Cameo – Word Up (Ow!) from 1987
  • Bloc Party – Helicopter
  • Gary Numan – Cars from 1979 Ummmm….
  • Beastie Boys – (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party) from 1986
  • Kaiser Chiefs – Oh My God
  • Travelling Wilburys – Handle with Care from 1988

'The News: on the hour every hour' – bit of a boring episode today.

  • Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Right Round (Like a Record) from 1985
  • Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand
  • Erasure – A Little Respect from 1988
  • Prince – Raspberry Beret from 1985
  • Doves – Black & White Town
  • Michael Jackson – Billie Jean from 1982
  • Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Two Tribes from 1984
  • Falco – Rock Me Amadeus (Guilty Pleasure track chosen by Matt) from 1986
  • Morrissey – Last of the International Playboys from 1989
  • Kate Bush – Hounds of Love from 1985

Also, we counted down the Top 5 most 80s films ever!! There was a lot of choose from, but in the end we went for films that look dated now but probably didn't expect to do so. For instance, This is Spinal Tap escapes due to the fact that it was very aware that it was an 80s film. Sooooooo…....

5. Flight of the Navigator
4. Back to the Future Part II
3. Top Gun
2. The Breakfast Club
1. TRON!! an 80s fest if ever there was one!

Mattanory will follow tomorrow.

Donkey Punch on FM!! – Thursday 1–3pm on RaW 87.7FM

Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk

Sorry for the lack of entries lately. Been busy writing essays and buying Valentine's Day presents. On that subject, my girlfriend, Sarah, bought me a limited edition giant pack of Love Hearts, the sweets (that's not all she got me. That would be a rubbish present on its own). Here are some of my favourites from that pack:-

  • Be Good – a nod to ET
  • Cute Kid – dodgy?!?
  • Say Yes – hey kids, just say no!
  • Like You – not 'love you', just 'like you'. You're alright.
  • Lucky Lips – mmmm…
  • You're Gorgeous – a nod to Britpop
  • Hold Me, Call Me, Catch Me, Find Me, E-mail Me and Send Me – anyone?
  • Wow – indeed

and finally…

  • Doh! – a bizarre nod to Homer Simpson

Don't forget to tune in to Donkey Punch tomorrow on 87.7FM in the Coventry and Kenilworth area, and online at www.radio.warwick.ac.uk from 1pm. It's a 'Don't Fear the 80's' Special tomorrow with every other tune being a good 80's tune. In additon to that we've got our special features Mattanory, the Guilty Pleasure and the Elastic Band Challenge in which John will be answering questions on the Pet Shop Boys. Lovely stuff!

Mattanory – Donkey Punch: Thursday 1–3pm on RaW 87.7FM

Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk

Yesterday's Mattanory story was a stone cold classic. Touching and moving in equal measures, and also unintentionally funny! It's the story which prompted us to have Mattanory as a feature on the show, this is 'Blind' by Matthew Briant aged 10:

I woke up one morning and could hear the sounds of my radio alarm clock. So I got out of bed and felt my way to the bathroom. There I felt the walls until I got to the basin. I touched the tap and turned it on. After I washed I touched my toothbrush and toothpaste to clean my teeth. Then I heard my brother Paul come out of his room and I said, "Paul, what is it like to see?"
"Let me put it this way," said Paul, "You would like it a lot."

'Hard-hitting' doesn't even come close to describing the impact of that story. Ken Loach has already expressed an interest in the movie rights.

p.s. Turns out it wasn't Roy Orbison reading the news yesterday, but a lady named Moira Alderson. Shame.

Today's Show: Donkey Punch – Thursday 1–3pm on RaW 87.7FM

Writing about web page http://www.radio.warwick.ac.uk

Oooooh, it's a horrible day. Absolutely pissed it down this morning to be followed by the ubiquitous Coventry drizzle. And because it's such a horrible day and i'm wetter than Rick Waller's armpits, it would be heart warming to hear some nice comments about the show today. If you listened, we thank you. If not, here's today's playlist so you can comment anyway:

  • The Beach Boys – Heroes and Villains
  • Belle and Sebastian – I'm a Cuckoo
  • Pulp – Mis-Shapes
  • Modest Mouse – The World at Large (Featured Album 'Good News for People Who Like Bad News')
  • The Bees – Wash in the Rain
  • The Who – The Kids are Alright
  • Charlotte Hatherley – Bastardo
  • Stevie Wonder – Superstition
  • Otis Redding – Hard to Handle

Our regular soap opera, 'The News: on the hour every hour', this week narrated by Roy Orbison apparently?!! And do we hear wedding bells for Charlie and Camilla…?

  • Scissor Sisters – Take Your Mama
  • The Arcade Fire – Neighbourhood (Tunnels)
  • Suede – We are the Pigs
  • The Rolling Stones – Jumpin' Jack Flash
  • Modest Mouse – Float on (Featured Album 'Good News…')
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps
  • The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever
  • The Walkmen – The Rat
  • Doves – Black and White Town
  • Tony Christie – Amarillo (Guilty Pleasure Track chosen by Matt. Guilt Rating: 7/10)
  • Super Furry Animals – She's Got Spies

Matt xx

p.s. Is Neon allowed to say 'piss' on the radio? He just can't not say it, it seems.
