French resist new spelling rules

Just reading the article about the French resisting the new spelling rules imposed on them from the top (French Academy) - See hrld.us/rxRoRa. I can't help wondering what would happen if we Brits were as resistant of authority. Or maybe we are? Did any government manage successfully to change any of our chaotic spelling system?
