Companies banned by the Student's Union

Was going through the Student's Union website when I noticed a link to Sponsorship Policies. Would have loved to have some energy companies sponsoring my societies and they have really deep pockets.

I was quite surprised when found out that the SU has a list of banned companies:

  • McDonalds
  • Esso/ExxonMobil
  • Arms Companies, e.g. BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, AWE, etc.
  • Nestle
  • Oil Companies, e.g. Shell, BP, Chevron, Total, etc.

Wondering why Esso/ ExxonMobil is listed seperately and not under Oil companies?

What about Body Shop, which is owned by L'Oréal, which is in turn partly owned by Nestlé.

Why McDonalds and not Burger King, KFC or Pizza Hut (later two owned by Yum! Brands).

  1. 1, 2 and 4 seem very arbitrary. Too specific, somehow. Maybe something happened in the past, and Warwick now has a grudge against these? :p

  2. Hi Alexander, Had a long discussion with one of my friends about this and apparently these 3 companies are seen as among the top unethical companies – maybe because of their high profile and negative associations – McDonalds and Junk food, Esso/ ExxonMobil with pollution and Nestle because of their marketing of breast milk substitutes.

I don’t think it’s because of the University but rather because of some vocal students which have strong feelings (in a negative way) towards these companies.

  3. Ah, I see. That would make sense.
