Awesome Icons: John McClane

As I was flicking through the television channels last night I came across a classic movie straight out of '88 that ramps up the action to hi-octane levels. I realised, as the pyrotechnic, blood soaked glory unfolded before me, that striding through the smoke and shattered lungs of his enemies was another of our hallowed, awesome icons: John McClane.

The film is called Die Hard for a reason; this guy just doesn't drop. He gets blown across the room by C4, kicked hard in the face more times than I could count, shot full force in the back, jumps off a building with only a fire hose wrapped round his waist (a move that, by all physical laws, should have broken him in two) and has to run across broken glass barefoot. Despite all this he still continues to prod buttock and spout one liners in a distinctly heroic fashion; even overcoming the nearly equally awesome Hans Gruber, the devilish mastermind behind his torment.

The thing I really like about Die Hard is how it pretends to be a christmas film despite the copious guts and swearing. Even fading out in the end to jaunty holiday music. Ingenious ingenuity.

The awesomeness of McClane was confirmed in the two following sequels in which he also failed to die, while blowing the hell out of all kinds of bad guys. He even blew up a whole plane.

Yippy-ki-yay, motherfucker

Awesomeness points: 69/100

Prepare for: STICKMAN COMBAT!!

I decided that Colin was asking for a beating, and what better way than through the ancient art of the stickman?

Watch and learn.

Did Colin escape? Or was he destroyed by the awesome force of awesome? Who knows… It is in fact a mystery, and a mysterious one at that.

I wonder if the chip shop is open

Its 10.45 so probably not, but it could be. I think its probably too much effort to walk down there and find out if its open, especially when I'm not sure if I could eat a whole portion of chips at this late hour anyway.

And yet, there is something comforting and rewarding about the chip shop chip that takes me to a happy place.

I just played all 30 songs on Singstar Party with Helen and my voice is cracked and broken. However we did set several new highscores; I'm coming for you Mat. You better be using that time at home to practice your singstar skills or there could be a new house champ brewing right here.

Easter Sunday was an awesome evening, due largely to the culinary magnificence of the lovely Helen, who laid on a delightful meal and an even more exquisite desert (Choc Chip Cookies, Chocolate Ice cream, Chocolate Sauce and Strawberries). I hope you are all suitably jealous.

Tommorow I finally depart the fair city of Coventry (Yes, John I'll turn the boiler off) and head back to my countryside retreat, where I shall go on long walks as I contemplate the final report into my CS project. While in the evenings I shall relax in my red silk dressing gown and ponder the important and meaningful philosophical issues that engulf us all.

More intruige and awesomosity soon.

Er..Happy Easter, again

Apparently I got the date wrong last time…

Those eggs I made earlier in the week can now be smooshed into little bits, but sadly there is no chocolate inside.

English Genius
You scored 85% Beginner, 92% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 94% Expert!
You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!

Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

For the complete Answer Key, visit my blog: link.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:

You scored higher than 18% on Beginner

You scored higher than 33% on Intermediate

You scored higher than 89% on Advanced

You scored higher than 99% on Expert

I like how my scores get better as the test supposedly gets harder. I thrive on difficulty it seems.

2005: A CS Project Odyssey

Its nearly over I hope, I'm down to the last serious objective and its only three odd weeks late (I blame the ill). Of course once it all works, and looks pretty its still not over. I have to actually do the presentation, as well as write a big fat report on it in the next six weeks. Like the mythological hero of the Homeric epic alluded to in the title; I shall eventually triumph and find my way home.

I've decided to make my next subject for reading revision the complete works of Nietzsche. What does not destroy me only makes me stronger.

Which doesn't lead me neatly to 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film which I have owned on DVD for over a year now and only just got around to watching last night on a whim. All I can say is, what the hell?

Why did they use every special effect available in the time period and squirt them all on the screen for about fifteen minutes, what was the part near the end with the white room containing georgian furniture? The black slabs? The intermission!? Kubrick, you are one crazy genius.

The middle part of the film with the evil AI HAL was however pretty awesome.

Better than chocolate

Is what I am, apparently.

Recently, when I've not been doing the project, I've been doing this:

Which is related to this:

Warwick Video Game Design Society

I don't think I've quite praised my fellow lovely society dudes enough. So here is some more praise; I love you all, in a man-manly way.

Saw a cool korean film last night called 'OldBoy' which I'd never heard of until I picked it up cheap in Sainsbury's, I guess I should make a review post but I'll just write about it here instead to be non-conformist. It manged to have a kungfu-style-revenge-plot mixed together with a psychological-thriller-with-a-twist-at-the-end plot. Think; Fight Club meets The Sixth Sense in a dark alley for a sensual kiss, when they are suddenly ambushed by Brotherhood of the Wolf and The Shawshank Redemption. Except its all in Korean with subtitles.

Then of course there is the project, many bugs have been squashed and the little killer spiderbeasts from hell are starting to behave in a quite life-like manner. Just two more objectives on my list before I move on to writing the final report. I'm suprisingly finding myself taking some enjoyment in it now, though I suspect as I struggle through these last few bits of code I'll rediscover my familiar loathing.

At the minute though its hard not to smile.

Working non–stop

The "project" has been absorbing all of my creativity today, it will be a happy glorious day when I finally put this beast to rest and can move on to pastures new. Somewhere in the middle of programming and reading about the history of computers, I think I may have gone slightly mad. I made these eggs:

I'm not quite sure why. Still, I guess they might make the project look prettier or at least more egg filled…

Everything is very quiet in Coventry and I succeeded in passing the entire day without seeing or hearing another human being.

Cleaning house

I'm currently trying to restore the University abode to its former glory after 10 weeks of being very much lived in by five folk with little to no knowledge of regular cleaning. Mainly I'm doing this as a distraction from working on the accursed project. This is also why I'm revising my History of Computing module already.

Considering rearranging my room and digitising the remainder of my CD collection to fill up more time…

On the positive side I'm feeling a lot happier and more creative than I have done in a long while. May get around to doing some more sketches and 3D modelling soon.
