Campaign Diary: Hustings/Candidate question time

Tonight was the hustings in which I nearly keeled over from tiredness and hunger. The presidential section was sped up a fair bit, I'd like to thank Carly Braddock for somewhat saving my speech from oblivion with some nice questions. At least I looked good.

I shall have to expand on a lot of these entries once the long campaign is over, exhaustion is sapping the will to blog funnily from the deep dark essence of my soul. Today I made it round some more of Rootes (I think I've done every block there now), Did Benefactors, though almost noone seemed to be in, and rounded off the afternoon with some light Jack Martin touring. Did no lecture tours today, which bizarrely earned me a few pledges of support.

Still need to visit Arthur Vick, Cryfield and the rest of Westwood.

Voting starts in about 9 hours.

  1. I pledge my support to ye.

I also heard some people on the bus saying that all the candidates have crap policies but you have the best poster.

  2. Ben Ashmore

    Your posters are pretty funny!

    01 Feb 2005, 23:58

  3. But would you becoming President mean no more funny blogs? This could be a decisive factor for voters…

  4. Yes! Go to Westwood, only one candidate really made an effort with Westwood last year and that was the current Pres. Seriously, they love getting visitors up there, reminds them of the world outside…

  5. I can't remember what happened today but I remember seeing Carly… was it at Sugar? Oh god, I can't remember. Help me Dan!

    02 Feb 2005, 02:55

  6. And yes, you must visit Arthur Vick and Cryfield, those were my halls in the first year. Yes, I lived in both the most expensive and the least expensive halls in the first year, by swapping rooms with Selena. Arthur Vick is good, so is Cryfield, it's all about the people really. They're both good. I'll go to sleep now. Bye

  7. Hi Dan. see you in A.I. at 10? maybe

    02 Feb 2005, 02:59

  8. I saw Carly too somewhere, but also don't remember where…

Probably sugar then. I think I'll also go sleep now, and probably not see anyone in A.I. at 10 as I'll still be fast asleep.

  9. Voting has started people. Vote Awesome!

    02 Feb 2005, 09:22

  10. I wrote all that stuff didn't I. Sorry.

    02 Feb 2005, 12:25

  11. Please do benefactors again – we'll make an effort to be in.

I'm putting a GIANT 'Vote Dan, Vote Awesome' sign in my window

  12. Well, I have to say that exercising my democratic right has never been so fun. I even managed to develop some genuine principals, such as not voting for people who used smilies, people who used too many colours and sole candidates who didn;t bother to make an effort with their manifesto.

I hope that RON gets voted in for something as he seems like a jolly nice chap.

As for the Presidency, despite not being visited by Dan (I guess a whirlwind tour of Europe was a bit beyond the budget?) I did indeed vote awesome. What with the website and manifesto and all, I was quite impressed!

    Good luck!

  13. I've voted for President and Deputy President… but it's a question of whether I'm too apathetic to vote for the other 20 or so. I'll get around to it.

I was considering starting a campaign for Ron – Vote R.O.N.! He's running for everything, you know. A few posters and some snappy policies, that's what he needs… it's the lack of a public face that's really holding him back. Still, there's always next year.

  14. should i vote for you?

must have missed you visiting my kitchen, terrible shame… found a flyer though.

    02 Feb 2005, 17:32

  15. Of course you should vote for Dan. How else would he take over the… I mean take charge of the Student's Union?

    02 Feb 2005, 17:52

  16. i am still feeling happy everyone can have smiles!
    :) :) :)

    02 Feb 2005, 18:04

  17. Is this Ron you speak of, infact, Ron Jeremy – famous pornstar and ironing world semi-finalist?

    02 Feb 2005, 19:34

  18. I speak, in fact, of US Congressman Ron Paul. You can see some of the issues he holds close to his heart, such as no forced mental health screening for children on link

    02 Feb 2005, 20:23

  19. Awesomely concerned

    > Dan Lawrence's Manifesto
    > Ctrl+F
    > "library"
    > Search term not found.

Longer opening hours for library? Or more library funding? That's the only thing stopping me from voting awesome at the moment, because our library is so not awesome. Otherwise, awesome manifesto.

    02 Feb 2005, 22:45

  20. That's because whilst the library needs improvement, Dan's campaign is focused on more achievable goals. If you look through his manifesto you'll find that most points are things that could actually be done relatively easily.

    02 Feb 2005, 23:00

  21. Indeed, I would rather Dan gave a bunch of realistic goals, than for him to make targets for turning the library around and be disappointed, because it's not likely to happen – not because of anything Dan wouldn't do right, it's just not likely. Who knows, maybe he will do something phenomenal, but he'd be right not to set any promises in stone.

Vote … you know who to vote for.

    02 Feb 2005, 23:35

  22. replace "will" with "would", if you like

    02 Feb 2005, 23:36

  23. Andrew, Nick H – the correct answer to "awesomely concerned"'s awesome concerns is that (s)he should look at www.voteawesome.tk, where Ctrl+F yields references to the library and many other policies for which there wasn't room within the brevity of the official online manifesto.

Any prospective voter is always free to email any serious candidate with questions about policies and campaigns, and I know Dan has publicised his address for this purpose.

    02 Feb 2005, 23:58

  24. BTW…it's explicitly against the elections regulations to stage a campaign for RON.
