USS Employers shown to have exaggerated life expectancy figures
Today's Times Higher Education has published a letter from Jane Hutton pointing out the error in the life expectancy figures that were on the Q&A page of the Employers Pensions Forum.
This is no minor technicality. The EPF had claimed that the life expectancy of a USS pensioner had increased by an average of 5.8 years per decade since the scheme was formed in 1974. They gave no source for this figure. The Office of National Statistics estimates that over the same period life expectancy increased by between 1.3 and 2.3 years per decade. This is a huge difference.
