0517 Leadership & Excellence

After one week team study, we will have class this week. Obviously, many classmate do many research and gave us  many interesing thinking today.

"Do you have to be a follower before become a good leader?" Actually, I don't think there will be a 100% correct answer to this question. Some one consider, after being a follower, you will have skills, have experience and knows what a follower needs.So , I have to ask "Do you have to be a leader before become a good follower?" Without being a leader, you will never know what a leader want follower to do..Quite funny right?

And some one consider, everyone follows somebody else after he was born. A baby follows his dad after he was born. So , everyone follows others in different level. I assume this situation, a baby feel hungry, and cry ,what make a nurse hurry to milk him. So, can I say the baby's target is making the nurse give him some food and he "cry "make the nurse toward his target, so he is leading a nurse, he is a leader? everyone is leading others!? Quite interesting.

I have to mention that,Fasial is a good leader, he put forward 3 options after everyone state his idea. These 3 options not only stop the potential conflict but also make him control the meeting's direction. But i also consider that, if he do not have such nice team menbers( just like me) , someone may against all these options,and there will be some conflits yet...

0516 Policy deployment

Finally, I finish the brief idea about how the strategy deploy using Hoshin Kanri.

At the first time, I think the deployment must be a very detailed plan, have many rules and formulates. But I found I have not engouht information about the company. WaveRiders seens not a real company( at least cannot found in google). We only have very rough information about it. For example, we have no idea about the Leisure sales team, how can we reorganize it? But we have to do this ,it is listed in our strategy.

And now, I only using some tools to mesure the performance( for example milestone ) and setting some steps to design the catchball process. Is it enough? Of course not, I am considering combining the balanced scorecard into our deployment. it will be better.

Any way, I think next week is real a hard week .  Are u ready?

3rd Day in Leadership and Excellence

Everyone who knows how to reply a comment just under it?like Facebook..>_< Please let me know, thanks:)

I found that some comments are really useful for me.  I really like Elvis's word, position must be earned. But I think Elvis and Wu misunderstand my opinion about "authority",( maybe due to I haven't made a clear explanation) I saw some journals use " authority" to describe the leadership ,which is similar to my idea so I wrote it down. In my opinion, Authority is not only the position you are. I had used an example while talking to Wu, there are 2 guys talking in the street, and the one who leads the talking direction is the leader in these two guys,at least in this talk.  So , Authority is something that make you different from others and make them believe you , do something what you want. Some times it is behavior and actions,sometimes it is special skills and experience,of course, in some case , it is position .

And , I totally agree with Mohammed. We are not describing how to be a good leader, just imagine what's core of leadership. We cannot be a good leader only taken this module.:)

Everyone can paint , but not everyone is a painter.That is what I learn in the class:)

May 05 2010 Team study

Today we used the Analysis Matrix summarise the most important characters in the given leadership definition and chose the suitable leadership function wrote down our leadership definition.

But , I am thinking that, the definition is only a summarise work, is it accurate ? Or there are a better way to define a leadership ? Besides, we know nothing about these given definitions, how did the author define these, what methods they use, just count how many times they mention about the characters in the definition, it seems not good.

And glad to talk to Julia, we share some ideas about the leadership.  I think, in julia opinion, Leadership means "service" and influence others to work for him.  And, I think authority maybe the pre-condition to a leader, no one can be a leader without the right to make a desicion. These two points are not included in the definitions which are given.

At last, we all agree there maybe different understands about "Leadership" base on different backgroud, so more discuss maybe good for us to expand our visions.


May 04 2010 First day in Leadership & Excellence module

Today is the first day in Leadership & Excellence module, and  there is no lecture and notes in the clasee. But during the module introduction, I pick up 2 views which is interesting:

1.There is no leader better than all team members. Therefore , it is no need for a leader to know everything his staff knows.

2.There is no poor workforce, only poor management.

In addition, I became the leader in team 3. This is my first time to lead a team out of china. I think, the first thing for a new small group leader is to know each team member well as quickly as i can. I found , although we 4 have different background , we always have same ideas on the questions.So there is seldom argument in our team. Besides,  my team mates are really nice and easy-going. I like them point out my weakness directly in the Assessment period.

I found I have some questions in leading a team.  I think a leader should influence team member to enthusiastic and efficient to achieve the target. So activities and communication is very important. Obviously, I was not doing well in these two aspect today. And I will do it better tomorrow.

At last, Congrats to all the teams for their excellent work today, but our team is the best ~right?  Thanks Faisal , Thanks Lukasz , Thanks Julia!!!
