Writing about web page http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/gpp/foodsecurity
In one of my post-PhD roles I am assisting as an academic gopher on one of the Global Priorities Projects. My GPP is Food Security which is extremely interesting and worth getting involved in. In order to create the web site I went on Sitebuilder training, so I could try and create some web pages for the FS GPP. The training is well worth doing as are the handouts the trainers from IT give you to take away. Mine are well worn and creased now as I have started getting to grips with parent and children that seem to appear in the wrong places - technical terms for a front page and sub page. Getting to speak the lingo but I wish my operationall skills were as informed as my linguistic understanding! As a site though it is possible to make a lot of links to other sites, bring in text, photos (well, in a fashion!) as well as creating a directory for anyone interested in the topic.
I would have never have thought that last year I would be involved in putting together the Web page for Food Security, as I was still struggling along, trying to finish the PhD. At the time that seemed hard but, on reflection, it did give me the security and I knew exactly what I would be doing for the next few months. Now it is done and dusted things have tended to have become a little more random and pressurised as I fill in Post-Doc and job applications, teach and continue with my other employment.
I suppose the advice I would give and where this blog links tto the Sitebuilder training is post -PhD use what is on offer at Warwick. Go and do any training that is on offer as having filled in a couple of application forms which want to know those things it was good to be able to put something in, especially if your publication list is minimal.
