Migrated to Gmail

Follow-up to Gmail from Dave's Blog

First I copied my address book… then realised I forgot to change e-mail address first (don't want to use my old nick 'Seppie' any more) so after signing up for a new account spent another 10 mins copying everything again.

BTW people I know please send me your latest contact details so I can keep them up to date! TIA

Anyway now all my accounts forward to Gmail, although a backup copy of both my Uni accounts' e-mails are kept on the uni server – just in case.

Emails from me will say they come from djmz.comATgmail.com, but the reply-to address is my primary e-mail address (DATve-Miller.com), which should still be used as it will always forward to my current email host.

Gmail

Writing about web page http://www.gmail.com/

I've had a Gmail account for a while now, and I love the interface. I'd like to use it all the time, so I can access my e-mails from any computer, but all my e-mails would be sent from an @gmail.com address instead of my real e-mail address... It's a shame you can't install the Gmail software on your own web server!Dave-Miller.com - 22nd

Firefox – Rediscover the web

Writing about web page http://www.getfirefox.com/

I've finally switched from IE to Firefox! There's even a Google toolbar available for it now. The latest version can import everything from IE, and my bookmarklets still work fine. :-)

Get Firefox!

Stuck For Ideas

Writing about web page http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/its/elab/services/webtools/blogs/faqs/entry/ideas/?xdoplain=true

My sister had her driving theory test this afternoon (she passed, well done!) so I'm going home a couple of hours later than normal. So since I have nothing better to do (well, that I can be bothered to do) I thought I'd answer all the questions on the above site…

Oldest questions first

List your top revision tips
Listen at the time so you have less to revise. Other than that I'm probably not the best person to ask – my revision usually consists of flicking though a textbook the day before!

What was your biggest mistake in your first year?
Ask me in 5 months.

Which module would you make compulsory?
For who? All ours are compulsory, except for one maths option.

What would convince you to choose a specific career?
I'm glad to see from reading ahead that the questions get better.

What is the best moment you have had in a lecture?
Roy Simmonds getting a bluetooth message saying something like "you suck" was pretty funny, though a little unfair. Other than that they've mostly been uneventful.

What is the best thing you have done in a seminar?
Sat, listened, not contributed. That's pretty much all I do.

Which book has helped you most with your work?
The internet.

What is the best place to live: Leamington, Coventry, Kenilworth or on campus?
On campus – I can come back between lectures and not leave til 10 mins before the lecture. It's a shame we can't live here next year really!

Which union society would you make every other student join?
"Every other"? Well I'm not in any societies anyway.

Which issue would make you want to become a politician?
None, I don't get involved with debates or things like that. Selfish or just lazy? You decide.

What is your favourite artwork on campus?
My desktop wallpaper? I've never looked.

What are your strengths?
Logical thinking.

Describe what you consider to be the most beautiful view in the world
I quite like the view of the sea and a beach on a sunny day. No people, just calm.

What's your favourite time of day? Why?
Night during holidays because I get the most stuff done… mainly because I'm avoiding going to bed, so I have the motivation to do something else! During term I don't really have one – during the day I'm tired and when it comes to evening I'm no longer tired but I have to go to bed or I'll be even more tired the next day!!

What everyday item is the most well designed? (Fit for purpose and aesthetically pleasing.)
eh?

If you could invent a piece of technology that would improve your academic life, what would it be and why?
A working BOSS system right now! Of things already invented, I think Mathematica improved the maths module a lot because now I know whether I have the right answer!

If you won £5 million, how would you spend it?
I'd probably just put it in the bank to earn interest and make me more money! I'd eventually spend it, but probably not on anything really big.

What's your favourite place on campus? Why?
My room – I can listen to my music or watch films and work on the computer. Gets a bit lonely sometimes though.

Name something about yourself that people don't expect
What don't you expect?

Which other universities did you apply to? Why did you choose Warwick?

  • Southampton (second choice, slightly lower grades)
  • York (too formal open day, poor accomodation),
  • Bath (didn't like it as much)
  • Reading (not as nice, lower grades)
  • Portsmouth (nice location but grades very low)

So chose Warwick by elimination.

What mesmerises you?
Sometimes songs I haven't heard before.

Which animal do you most resemble in both appearance and habit?
Guinea pigs are shy and eat a lot, so them in habit. In appearance I have no idea.

What's your favourite cartoon? Why?
Simpsons – it's funny and not at all serious, and has jokes for both children and adults.

What's the stupidest thing you've ever done?
If I did something stupid I've probably blocked it out of my mind already.

Name a book you'd recommend to a friend. Why?
I don't read books often, I read web sites.

Have you ever won a trophy? What for?
Not that I can think of. I have a load of certificates but mainly for normal boring school work.

What's the furthest place you've ever travelled to?
America, but that was 10 years ago now.

Have you ever been in a school play? Was it good? Were you good?
Not since first school (primary school but years 1–4 only). I was the snake in The Jungle Book.

Who's funnier, Jim Carrey or Bill Murray?
I don't know who Bill Murray is, but Jim Carrey is definately funny.

What's your favourite scary movie?
The first one. Oh, "scary movie" not "Scary Movie"?! I don't like scary movies much.

What one thing would you most like to accomplish with your life?
Finally finish the PHP CMS I've been working on on-and-off for the last 4 years!

Where will you be in five year's time?
Sitting in front of a computer screen of course.

What item of your friends' would you most like to have for your own?
What ya got? If I wanted something I'd probably just buy one!

OK that's enough for now! I'll add the other half of the list next time I'm putting off working!

Getting To Know Your Friends

Welcome to the summer edition of getting to know your friends. What you are supposed to do is copy (not forward) this entire e-mail and paste it onto a new e-mail that you'll send. Change all the answers so they apply to you, and then send this to a whole bunch of people including the person who sent it to you. The theory is that you will learn a lot of little things about your friends, if you did not know them already…..

1. What time did you get up this morning?
7:50 then had 4 lectures in a row!

2. Diamonds or pearls?
Can't really picture either. Diamonds sounds better.

3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema?
Wimbledon, and Oceans Twelve the day before

4. What is your favourite TV show of all time?
Was Friends but I've watched it so many times I got a bit bored of it. Depends what I'm currently watching really – Charmed, Spooks, 24, Bugs, Will & Grace, Simpsons… but I think Red Dwarf tops them all.

5. What did you have for breakfast?
Nothing. Hmm no wonder I was hungry in lectures!

6. What is your middle name?
James.

7. What foods do you dislike?
Most vegetables. I'm pretty fussy generally.

8. What is your favourite crisp flavour?
Salt + Vinegar.

9. What kind of car do you drive?
Mum's little blue (sorry, Moonstone) Peugeot 206. But not often.

10. Favourite Sandwich?
Chicken toasted sandwich.

11. Who do you think is a babe?
What like the pig? Oh I get it now… Don't know really.

12. Favourite item of clothing?
Hoody.

13. If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go?
I don't know really, I'm not good at relaxing. Need to be doing something.

14. What colour is your bathroom?
At uni – pretty much just white. At home – I don't know currently, it's being redecorated this week!

15. Favourite brand of clothing?
Whatever's most comfortable really.

16. Where would you retire to?
A basement with no light and lots of monitors like in Swordfish… Not really I'm not actually that sad! I don't know yet.

17. Favourite time of the day?
Night when I don't have to get up the next morning!

18. What was your most memorable birthday?
Um.. it was.. that one… No, it's gone again.

19. Where were you born?
Walsall

20. Favourite sport to watch?
Tennis

21. Who do you least expect to send this back to you?
Well it's a weblog so I don't know.

22. Person you expect to send it back first?
Saz, since she has half term and therefore nothing better to do. Coursework doesn't count as better.

23. Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi, but actually lemonade.

24. Vodka or Brandy?
Vodka.

25. Birthday?
19th Sept.

26. What gift would you like for your birthday?
I don't know it's a long way off.

Sent to me by Alex.

Stupidity

Writing about web page http://bash.org/?top

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
