How To Break A Computer

Put both fans on back-to-front

Yep, somehow, don't know how, both my case fan and my CPU fan were on back-to-front! I only realised because it's been rebooting itself a lot lately, and I had the case open while I was trying to fix it. Just hope it's not permanently damaged…

  1. Intel or AMD?

Intel's are better at surviving overheating than AMD as the clock throttling technology is better. Either way if the machine is still booting you haven't done any permanent damage if any at all

  2. AMD Athlon 3000+

The problem with it turning itself off has been intermittant, and it was only unusable this morning. It's always within a few minutes, usually seconds, of booting rather than while it's hot. After I fixed the fans it wouldn't work a couple of times, but it's now working again. I guess only time will tell whether that was the cause or not.

  3. It just turned itself off again. That's the first time it's done it long after booting instead of during or just after.

  4. It's not always a bad idea to have a case fan on "back to front". On mine, I have a fan attached to the back of the case sucking air in, then one of those centrifugal fans that sits in a PCI slot blowing out – the intention being to keep the internal air temperature as low as possible. The only problem with this, of course, is that the inside gets full of dust far quicker.

  5. That probably explains why it hasn't failed completely until now – it's been in my room at home under my window over easter, but here it's squashed in a corner with no ventilation and was noticably hot to touch last week. I didn't think much of it except to disable Google Compute so the processor wouldn't run at 100% all the time.
