Chocolate Jesus

Reading the News today I came across an article about a new piece of Art

It depicts Jesus on the Cross, nothing new, but it is made out of chocolate. The article reports that there has been uproar from Catholics in New York, where the Art is exhibited. The article is not clear as to exactly why this has caused so many complaints, it does say that the sculpture has no loin cloth and that the Exhibit was opened during Holy Week.

So where is the contraversy?
Because he made a Chocolate Jesus?
Because he is naked?
Because it co-insides with Holy Week?

What you do you once you're a Christian?

It's a question many of us ask ourselves after being born again. Similarly I have been asked by friends and family the same question too.

The obvious things to list are Prayer and grow faith in God.

Another is to

Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself.

This is found in Matthew 7:12. The whole of Matthew needs to be followed but Verse 12 sums it up.

It doesn't get any more complicated than is.

An example of this for me was last night. On Thursday nights my friends always have a friendship meal. It's open house for Christians and non–Christians alike. It's an opportunity to get to know people and be hospitable. As Thursdays are always busy I made myself a drink. I thought how nice it would be if someone was to make a drink for me. So then I decided I would do just that for everyone else. The end result was making some 30+ drinks, which takes a while with a normal house kettle that will fill about 4 cups. Keeping track of who I had asked and who I hadn't was a task as many people arrived at different times. A simple thought turned into a mission but I felt it worthwhile, especially as there were some people I hadn't met before and it's always good to feel welcomed when you visiting someone for the first time. In the end I succeeded in making sure everyone had a drink or had at least been asked and said 'no'. One brother did manage to have three drinks made in the middle of all this which was quite amusing.

It wasn't so much the act itself that was good; many do good acts without faith. The fact that I was thinking of God and thinking of others while doing it was the most beneficial, I think I gained the most from the exercise.

Taking on the Yoke – Why name my site this?

Well every blog needs a name; to distinguish it from another. Itís also helpful to pick something that tells the reader a little about yourself or the subject and purpose for the blog. In my case, I wanted something that the reader would identify with being Christian.

Itís taken from the book of Matthew 11:28–30 in the new testament.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Matthew 11:28–30 NIV

One thing you quickly learn with reading the bible is that the meaning of scripture can appear superficially to mean one thing and then on closer inspection mean something quite different. For me this is one such piece of scripture. In it Jesus uses the analogy of using a Yoke. I first read this to be a Yoke like the type used when carrying water, a singular Yoke. I later realized that he meant it to be a double a yoke, like the ones used with oxen for plowing. Looking at the scripture again I realized that Jesus wants us to walk with him at the same pace, so that we can learn from him, not just carry his burden as I had misread it previously. I now find the message far more comforting and easy to digest.
